Overview
Working towards the completion of assigned tasks , taking part in the VAT reporting and reconciliation process, posting journals and completing balance sheet reconciliations. This is on top of being the Blackline admin for the Glasgow office, and assisting the Corporate Accounting team with projects and any adhoc tasks. The role involved communicating with multiple teams and key stakeholders across the business, as well as working within tight, inflexible deadlines.
Skills
Built a range of soft skills including communication, time management, prioritization , interpersonal skills, as well as developed a range of technical. This includes knowledge of financial terminology and accounting processes. Built foundational excel skills and built on Microsoft office literacy, as well as learning new finance applications such as Blackline and Peoplesoft.
Responsibilities
I was treated as an incoming analyst within the team, and so was given the responsibility and the tasks a normal analyst would be expected to complete. This meant I was also entirely responsible for my own deadlines and deliverables, as well as the order in which I prioritized my tasks. I was given full responsibility and independence in relation to my workload and allocated tasks.
Support & Guidance
I was regularly reminded of the support available within the team. Catchups with my line manager were bi-weekly, and this was on top of regular team calls where workload was discussed in detail. The organization works on a 3-month probationary period training scheme. This initial three months was were I was taught how to complete the majority of my tasks and where I built most of my understanding. My team were always there to provide support . and there were a range of SOPs available to follow.
Culture
The company culture was very positive and inclusive. Participation in events and charity work were actively encouraged and advertised. A clear effort was made to make the office environment relaxed , and there is a large emphasis on team member welfare and rewarding. However , sometimes I found the company culture to be too relaxed, mainly the dress code which bordered on overly casual for some team members.
Your Impressions
I thoroughly enjoyed my placement overall. While I have to recognize that at some points I was stressed, demotivated or frustrated, my experience was overwhelmingly positive , and I attribute these lower points to adjusting to working a corporate role straight out of university. I enjoyed the role , as well as the external opportunities that were offered by the company
Yes
The company places a large emphasis on culture and the Hilton values, which appear regularly in competitions, announcements and reward schemes. I would lean heavily into relating prior experience to these values, as well as do research into the Hilton business plan and how they operate as a company. The placement interview was not overly technical, I would instead focus on how you can link your soft skills to the prospective role, as well as the Hilton values
