Skills
The main skills that I have learnt during my placement would be Proactive sourcing for talent. This was done through learning and understanding recruitment technology such as Linkedin Recruiter and Taleo. I am now able to spot what a suitable candidate looks like in a matter of seconds and contact them in the appropriate way. I have also learnt commercial awareness, through my involvement in a number of projects both within my team but also working alongside other departments, providing me with a solid understanding of the direction that Hilton as a company is taking and then implementing this in my work going forward. I have also developed data analysis, teamwork, communication and resilience skills throughout my internship.
Responsibilities
I had the initial expectation that I would purely be supporting my team members with their work and always being supervised as an intern. However, I misjudged this completely and was given full responsibility pretty early in my internship. I shadowed some of my colleagues with their screening calls and their CV screenings and then was given the opportunity to do this on my own which was very rewarding. Furthermore was given more responsibility about halfway through when I was given my own role to lead and manage. Since this period I have managed all roles given to me and have not had the need to be supervised which is a great feeling and I have therefore gained so many new skills.
Support & Guidance
I received a great amount of support and guidance throughout my whole internship. Initially the support was very string in the first few weeks as we settled in, went through induction and were trained by a variety of team members from different sub departments. Then as the internship progressed, the support filtered down to my team giving me more corporate specific guidance, as I shadowed them and asked as many questions as I needed. I also had the opportunity to gain support from other sub departments if needed, for example, members of the grad team helped me with invoicing and members of the GM/Ops team helped me with other aspects such as our recruitment software. I always felt welcome to ask any questions and always felt prepared going into any task that I was asked to do, due to the guidance that I had beforehand and during.
Culture
The company culture at Hilton is amazing and I have felt welcome and part of the team since the assessment centre, as this was when I first realized that Hilton does live up to being named the number one best workplace. The office always has events going on, such as team member appreciation week, or Coffee Chats with senior leaders that gives people from all different departments to speak and socialize with each other. The general atmosphere in my team is also amazing, as we get the work done but there is also opportunity to catch p with each other and I have had the chance to make long term friends from this internship.
Your Impressions
I have thoroughly enjoyed my placement year and have made the most out of it in every aspect, including developmental, social, ad professional and would love to come back to work in this team again. It has been an amazing year, as I have learnt a lot about myself, how the corporate world works and a plethora of skills and qualities that I will bring with me to my future endeavors. I will definitely really miss the company and having the opportunity to work with such a great team and such purposeful work.
Yes
As I have been working in the recruitment team, I have gained so much experience with the candidate experience with applying, and definitely learnt the Do's and Don'ts over the past year. To summarize though, I would recommend going into your application with optimism, and treat every [person from the Hilton team that you speak to with enthusiasm, professionalism and kindness, as this will provide a great first impression, whether this be on an initial screening call r in a final interview (as every stage holds importance!). If you have to complete a video interview I would definitely suggest against using AI to generate your answers, and just being your authentic self for this part and the rest of the process, as this is what the team is looking for!
