The Role
I really enjoyed the time I spent at Towers Watson and the opportunity to learn a lot about the job, meet new people and confirm my desire to work as an actuary in the future.
From the start of my internship, I felt like part of the team. My colleagues always seemed more than happy to pass work down to me, while offering helpful support and guidance through any problems that arose.
My line manager was very approachable and supportive whenever I needed help or had questions. On top of my line manager, I felt like everyone in the team really made an effort to support me throughout my internship.
In general I felt fairly busy, with a variety of client work to do. At times when I felt quieter, we had a couple of intern projects which filled this time nicely and I also spent some time working on another project with a different team.
Right from the beginning I was completing various different types of work for clients. I was also at times helping to check other people's work before it was sent out.
I developed many skills whilst on my internship; aside from learning more about the retirement industry, I have improved my organisational, time-management and communication skills. These softer skills will be helpful as I continue into my final year of university. Additionally, the internship has allowed me to experience working in an office environment, which will definitely assist me as I move forward in my career.
The Company
Everyone in the office was friendly and approachable, really making an effort to get to know us. From the start, I felt really involved and part of the team.
The internship was a good balance of organised training sessions and the opportunity to work independently. This allowed me to learn the basics at the beginning, while giving me the chance to learn more as I went along.
We had many different training sessions throughout the internship, which were very helpful for both the day-to-day work and to learn a bit more about the company and its different departments.
Company Parties/Events
The internship just confirmed my desire to work for Towers Watson in the future!
The Culture
There was a really good social scene during the internship, regularly going for drinks, pub lunches, BBQs and we also had a team sports day.
In comparison to going to university in Bristol, Leeds is a very reasonably priced city to work in.
Leeds is also a fun city to go out in, with a variety of different pubs, bars and restaurants.
There was lots of opportunities to get involved and I felt really busy over the six weeks outside work.
