The Role
This was a great experience in office life and also the commitments of an actuary. However, what made this standout was the very relaxed atmosphere in the office and also the diverse nature of the work I had the opportunity to do. Whilst a significant chunk was dominated by client team work, I had the freedom to choose two presentations to take on within a technical topic and the risk solutions division. This made sure that every day I was trying something different and made the experience very interesting.
Due to the nature of being a consultancy, the emphasis was on working within client teams and I was involved through email communications and also a variety of client team meeting on progress of work. Suitable work also filtered down to my level so it was good to be involved whilst not being overloaded.
We had weekly meetings on the work we had done the previous week to gauge the experiences we were having during the internship and I was in regular correspondence with my line manager in spite of how busy he was with his client team work.
I had a good balance between the client work during the days and also free time to take on the two presentations and other ongoing projects at my own pace. This also allowed me to mix things up, time permitting, so that the jobs never got tedious.
As Towers Watson has the practice of reviewing every piece of client work multiple times, it meant that I could take on calculations and projects that have a direct impact on our clients knowing that it would be checked.
In one aspect, learning about the pensions industry and the financial services industry will definitely prepare me for the future whilst the emphasis on team work during these six weeks has taught me how to operate efficiently in large complex projects in a professional environment.
The Company
As I mentioned before, the atmosphere is very well balanced between professional and being calm which is the most suitable way to operate I believe. People would often talk about other things at their desks such as cricket which adds more variety to the working life here.
The internship was well organised in the sense that it's aim was to integrate us into the client teams which was very successful and also to talk on personal development projects such as the presentations.
In addition to the presentations for us to produce, we had a taster of graduate training through sessions throughout the six weeks which gave a very comprehensive introduction to the retirements side of the business.

Company Parties/Events
There is a direct path into the graduate scheme and after taking actuarial exams, moving up into more a formal consulting role. There is a lot of support along the way so the future employment prospects are basically laid out.
The Culture
The other interns are great and with only seven of us, it allowed us to bond together as a group and also getting to know the people who work here. In particular, the graduates have been very active in getting to know us and we have done many socials together to the pub.
Other than the people at Towers Watson, there are not many people to get to know in Reigate and the cost of living in Surrey in general is high but I was able to stay at a TW associate's house who had a spare room which meant it was very convenient and the rent was generous.
Reigate is not a large city so the nightlife is largely pub trips but nonetheless the other people here are great and it is the company that makes the night good.
We had summer socials, rounders tournaments and opportunities for football and plenty more.
