The Role
It was, without a doubt, one of the most memorable work experiences of my life. The work, the people and the atmosphere, all contributed to a brilliant six weeks.
My colleagues were some of the best and brightest minds I have met, they made me feel welcomed and appreciated. I was invited to socials almost every week, and the interns always had lunch with other associates which was a brilliant way to catch-up and meet more people across the organization. I also had a great buddy and some amazing project leads who were always willing to provide help and support. They made me feel right at home.
Firstly, we were given comprehensive training, whether formal or informal, on the tasks we had to do. At times when I did run into problems, everyone was more than willing to help me, whether my line manager, project leads, buddy or just about anyone else I asked.
We had two main projects to work on, one on life side and the other on P&C side. Apart from that, we had two assignments which we had to complete. We also had regular training sessions about different aspects of TW business. My time was perfectly divided between these tasks, I did not have a single moment where I sat idle. At one point, I completed one of my tasks earlier than anticipated, so I simply asked for more work, which was readily available.
The projects I completed were actually part of ongoing client work at Towers Watson and that is something I relished while working on them. Not only was I given real responsibility, I was allowed to use my own skills/judgment to carry out the tasks assigned. And I was given constructive feedback on my performance every step of the way.
I have developed both technical and soft skills in my six weeks here. I learnt to use TW Software which is the industry standard in Actuarial work and would be useful for my future career. I also developed excellent VBA skills which would definitely be a perk in my studies and my career. I received training on various aspects of actuarial work, including reserving, profit testing and different insurance products. This would be particularly useful in some of my modules next year at university and of course, for an actuarial career in general.
The Company
TW offices have a very high achieving atmosphere. Everyone here is great at what they do and have an extremely strong work ethic. Yet, they are some of the most down-to-earth people I have met. It is definitely its people that makes Towers Watson a brilliant company to work for. Whenever someone came back from a holiday, they always brought cakes or sweets from their travels, which is a fun way to get to know more people, and well, free cakes!
The internship was brilliantly designed. We got substantial exposure to both life and P&C side of the business. The work we did was widely varied and directly related to what actuarial consultants do. So I now have a fairly good idea of what it is like to work at an actuarial consultancy and what kind of work is expected of us.
As I have mentioned previously, we had regular training sessions on different aspects of actuarial work and TW business. We even had a tour of the Lloyds of London which was fantastic. It was quite apparent throughout the company wanted us to take as much from this internship as possible. After all they are searching for their next batch of graduates!

I would take up a graduate offer in a heartbeat! From my own experience, and from my conversations with people at different seniority level, TW is an absolutely fantastic place to develop and polish your actuarial skills. The culture is meritocratic, and advancement to higher levels depends on your commitment and passion.
The Culture
Definitely yes! I was part of RCS, we had socials almost every week. Whether celebratory drinks on passing exams or leaving drinks, these were a great opportunity to meet more people and just have an excellent time in general.
I worked in both Reigate and London, mostly the former. Socialising costs were generally quite high. But living expenses were quite reasonable, mostly due to the fact that I rented a room with one of TW's associates.
I am not a fan of going out partying as much. There are many pubs in Reigate but there aren't any clubs I have seen. As for London, well it's London.
Well there were a great many socials as I have mentioned. There were also marathons or tournaments with clients but not as many.
