Overview
working on research and development, proof of concept type software engineering project
Skills
yes, largely development my c++ ability, learnt a massive amount about low level programming and embedded software and learnt a lot about the general way a software workplace work and how to better manage my time
Responsibilities
I was tasked with a project to do completely by my self the first few weeks, being solely responsible for meeting the requirements and specification, then about 3-4 weeks in, another intern joined me so i had less solo responsibilities than i did before as we worked together for the rest of the project.
Support & Guidance
while it was quite difficult to get a hold of my technical coordinator, as he is a very busy man, when he was free he would really dedicate his time to us and gave us a massive amount of information and career lessons that i never wouldve learnt otherwise, it was very good as it felt like he genuinely cared about training and teaching us to the best of his ability and fitted us in his very busy schedule as much as he could. When he wasnt around it was usually quite easy to get help from someone else, although the floorplates and our lack of security clearance made it harder to get people.
Culture
very friendly, everyone is always so willing to help you and explain concepts that you may not fully understand, i always felt comfortable going up to talk to people, and felt very comfortable working here.
Your Impressions
i have really enjoyed my placement as i feel like i have learnt lots of valuable information and developed my core programming and software engineering skills immensely, i felt like the office was a great place to work and all the other employees were very friendly. It would have been nice to be able to get SC security clearance rather than BPSS so we were able to see some real projects and see how actual teams work together but i understand the difficultly in time constraints for getting that done before we start working.
Yes
dont be scared to apply, definitely go for it, even the application process was a great experience, and just make sure to be yourself in the interviews, take every opportunity you can to talk to people, even in the interviews i felt the interviewers were very easy to talk to and very friendly, so dont be scared just go for it!
