Overview
I work from the office and I am responsible for my own project. Each SDAS Summer Placement's project is different but mine involves frequent communication between different MBDA teams and experts, communication with and understanding of the customers requirements and problem solving to connect the dots.
Skills
The role differs from my degree in that it involves a broader understanding of engineering and more qualitative problem solving. I have greatly enjoyed developing my understanding of the Engineering involved in defence, weapon systems and airborne platforms. So far I have had a focus on documentation writing and have seen my ability improve steadily. I have also enjoyed the skills gained from my added responsibility, especially regarding communication with customers and internal stakeholders.
Responsibilities
As mentioned above, I have had a lot of responsibility in my own project, so yes, the outcome of work produced is directly the result of how much effort I put.
Support & Guidance
I have had a line-manager who checks on my progress and helps steer me in the correct direction. I have enjoyed figuring out a lot of things for myself but if ever I am stuck or don't know how to progress I have someone to give me a hand.
Culture
It very nice and welcoming. The Early Career Placements (i.e Summer Placements, Undergrads and Grads) are all very friendly and the office is always a nice place to meet people. MBDA is very relaxed with in office or home working and the Dynamic working is a great benefit, where additional hours worked can be used as time off at a later date.
Your Impressions
I have had a great time so far. It has been a great experience to see what engineering in a large defence company is like and has been brilliant for my own career development.
