    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • It varied because of the nature of the team I was in, but I spent time updating the asset register with any new costs or new assets that had come in. I also would notify cost controllers of whether or not they had any IT approvals within their area. I also helped with overseeing where we had overspent on CapEx and why, and helping to resolve this. Lots of ad-hoc tasks throughout and dealing with queries from inside and outside Finance. Month end was also very busy with preparing largely capital related journals so we could close each month on time, and report preparation so controllers were aware of their CapEx spend at the end of each month.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • I don't study a Finance degree, so everything I did was learning and then developing new skills. I have increased proficiency with Excel, have learned other software and have grown a lot more familiar with how double-entries work in practice, amongst other things. I have also grown a lot in confidence as I often had to respond to queries under time pressure, or had people across the business calling me with problems which I had to do my best to resolve

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • Yes - within two months I was at the forefront of carrying out a capex audit, and when one team member went on long term sick I got involved with helping to prepare and upload the 2025 budgets for her directorate, as well as preparing and distributing reports on her behalf. At month end, myself and one other team member were responsible for completing all the Capital journals by working day 3, and all the reports I completed were distributed across the business monthly. I also got involved with some tasks related to the external audit.

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • The ideal amount, over the first few weeks I spent at least an hour with every team member so I could get to know them and what they do. This importantly laid the foundation for me to feel that I felt throughout the year I could have gone to any of them with questions if I had any, and they were always fantastic with helping me out where I needed it.

  • How would you rate the support and guidance from the wider team?

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • Great, it feels like there's a real emphasis on making sure everyone is comfortable in their roles, and everyone is so friendly that at times it doesn't feel like coming in to work. There feels like there is a strong emphasis on the social side of work, and doing everything we can to make sure we don't just sit at our desks all day, coffee breaks are definitely a part of the culture!

    Your Impressions

  • 6. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
  • The year has honestly flown by, which isn't to say like I feel like a newbie still. Between getting fully immersed in a finance role, the culture at MBDA very much aligning with what I had hoped it would be like, and spending time in just the best team, I feel very lucky to have spent the year here.

  • 7. Would you recommend MBDA to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 8. What advice would you give to others applying to MBDA
  • Do it! The application process even was so much more pleasant than all the others I undertook when looking for a placement. Where other interviews felt like I was being interrogated, here it felt like the interviewer really wanted me to succeed, and I feel like that really helped me come up with answers. Do your research on the business, irrespective of which area you're applying to, and although it's a terrible clich茅 at this point, do be yourself. Part of the interview process is making sure you as a person are right for MBDA, and being well spoken, personable and genuinely interested in the business will go a long way.
