Overview
On a day-to-day, I engage in Scrum meetings as per Agile SDLC, prepare myself for any work that I need to do, and start working. I will plan any development that I need to do, and reach out to any colleagues that I need to cooperate with on any particular development tasks. I typically have at least 2 meetings a day just for technical conversations, and the rest of the day is for me to work on software-engineering-related tasks.
Skills
I have learnt many new skills, including JavaScript and ReactJS. I鈥檝e also developed my knowledge of SQL and Java during my placement, which will be very helpful going back to University to finish my degree. I have also developed on my soft skills, including public speaking, organisation and productivity. These will be very transferrable as I continue to University, and further in my career. The Java, SQL, JavaScript and ReactJS were developed a lot during this placement in particular.
Responsibilities
I was given quite a bit of responsibility. I worked on the modernisation of my team鈥檚 application. This is going to be used throughout the company even while I am gone, which is very rewarding, knowing that work I have done will have a lasting impact. Moreover, I got to work in different parts of my team, to further understand the entire system, and how everything intertwines, which I really enjoyed. Working on different parts of the same project was very rewarding.
Support & Guidance
I got a lot of support from HR and from members of my team. When I needed help, I would know who to go to.
Culture
The culture was rich, and there are people from all over the world, so culture was very integrated into the work life. I got to meet and work with people from all over the world.
Your Impressions
I really enjoyed my placement! I had a great year.
Yes
Go in with an open mind. Be prepared to be challenged, but don鈥檛 take that negatively. It will all work out positively, and they value your growth!
