Overview
During my 12-month industrial placement at Nomura, I worked in the Wholesale Production Services (WPS) team within the Technology division. My role focused on providing front-line technical support to key trading and operations platforms, ensuring system stability and rapid issue resolution for business-critical applications. I collaborated closely with developers, infrastructure teams, and business stakeholders across global time zones, gaining hands-on experience in incident management, monitoring tools, and process improvement. The placement significantly developed my problem-solving skills, technical knowledge, and ability to work effectively under pressure in a fast-paced financial environment.
Skills
During my placement at Nomura in the Wholesale Production Services (WPS) team, I developed a strong technical skill set, including proficiency in SQL for data analysis, Linux for system navigation and troubleshooting, Grafana for monitoring and visualisation, Python for scripting and automation, and JavaScript for enhancing internal tools. In addition to these technical skills, I significantly improved my soft skills, such as effective communication with stakeholders, time management, problem-solving under pressure, and the ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced, high-stakes environment.
Responsibilities
Yes, I was given a high level of responsibility from early on. I supported critical trading applications, handled real-time incidents, and was trusted to communicate directly with traders and developers. I also led improvements to monitoring dashboards using Grafana and automated manual tasks using Python scripts. My work had a direct impact on system stability and operational efficiency, and I was treated as a full member of the team throughout the placement.
Support & Guidance
I received excellent support throughout my placement. I had a dedicated manager, buddy, and mentor who were all approachable and keen to help me grow. The flat hierarchy made it easy to ask questions and get involved in meaningful work. Whether I needed technical guidance or career advice, someone was always willing to support me. The collaborative culture really helped me build confidence and develop both personally and professionally.
Culture
The culture at Nomura was incredibly supportive, collaborative, and inclusive. Despite being a large global firm, it felt like a flat hierarchy where everyone was approachable and willing to help. I was encouraged to ask questions, take initiative, and contribute meaningfully. The atmosphere was fast-paced but never overwhelming, and there was a strong emphasis on learning and development. I truly felt like a valued member of the team, not just an intern.
Your Impressions
I genuinely loved my placement at Nomura. It was an amazing experience where I was given real responsibility and felt trusted by my team. The work was interesting, the environment was fun and dynamic, and I made great memories throughout the year. I built strong connections with people across the firm and always felt included and supported. Overall, it was both professionally rewarding and personally enjoyable — a placement I’ll always look back on fondly.

Nomura offers a fantastic learning environment with great exposure to real projects, so make sure you show genuine enthusiasm and be yourself during the interviews. It’s a great opportunity to develop both technical and professional skills.
