    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • Daily catch ups with the team about current work. The internship is split into two - Placement project (carried out with a real internal team) and business project (carried out alongside the interns). Normally spend about half a day on each. In addition, throughout the day there tend to be calls where you have the chance to learn from senior members of staff (ai, fincrime, etc).

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • You will learn a huge number of skills, if not then develop on existing ones. Both technical and non-technical. To give an example: Technical: - Coding - Git - Testing - General software engineering cycle Non-technical: - Public speaking - Networking - Teamwork (V. important)

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • A lot of responsibility. My placement work was stuff which the team had wanted to implement for a very long time but nobody had the spare time to work on it. My work is part of a system which 97% of the companies costs flow through, and is largely responsible for the regulatory reports being sent to the FCA to ensure compliance.

  • Please rate how meaningful the work you were doing was

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • An astonishing amount. We had the early talent team who checked in most weeks to make sure everything was going well. Every intern gets their own line manager who makes sure your work is going well. You also get a buddy who will check in often and that you can go to for anything you don't want to tell your manager. I also had a mentor, relevant to my work who I got to speak to most weeks.

  • How would you rate the support and guidance from the wider team?

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • Great. Everyone is encouraging and wants you to do well. You are encouraged to move around and explore business areas rather than staying with what you are assigned from the start. You are also encouraged to reach out to anyone who works in an area which interests you.

    Your Impressions

  • 6. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
  • It was a fantastic experience. I gained so much knowledge of working in a large organisation, how corporate life works and in general about banking/finance in software engineering. Would strongly recommend to anyone else.
