    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • As a strategy consulting intern, my role involves supporting project teams in solving complex business problems and delivering data-driven recommendations to clients. On a day-to-day basis, I assist with internal analysis to inform strategic decisions. I work closely with senior stakeholders to develop presentations to deliver key messages, contribute to workshops, and help structure project deliverables. My responsibilities also include synthesising information and being resourceful in order to aid team discussions to shape project direction. Through this hands-on experience, I gain exposure to a range of industries and business challenges while developing core consulting skills in analysis, communication, and problem-solving.

  • During my internship I鈥檝e both learned new skills and significantly developed existing ones. I鈥檝e enhanced my analytical and problem-solving abilities by working with real client data and applying frameworks to break down complex business challenges. I鈥檝e also improved my proficiency in tools like Excel and PowerPoint, especially in building models and creating clear, concise presentations to tell stories. Collaborating with experienced consultants has strengthened my communication and teamwork skills, while exposure to fast-paced project work has helped me become more adaptable, detail-oriented, and confident in managing tasks under pressure.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • Yes, I was given a good amount of responsibility during my internship, including the opportunity to involve myself in key team and client meetings. I was encouraged to actively participate in discussions, take notes, and share my perspective when appropriate, which helped me better understand the strategic direction of each project. I also contributed directly to project work by conducting research, analysing data, and helping develop client deliverables. Being part of these meetings and workstreams not only gave me exposure to senior stakeholders but also allowed me to see how my contributions fed into the broader strategy and final recommendations.

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • I received a strong level of support and guidance throughout my internship. From the start, I was given a clear onboarding process and had regular check-ins with my manager to track progress and ask questions. I was also paired with a buddy who helped me navigate the team culture and day-to-day tasks. Consultants and team members were approachable and always willing to offer feedback, explain concepts, or walk me through unfamiliar tools and frameworks. This supportive environment made it easy to learn, build confidence, and take on more responsibility as the internship progressed.

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • The company culture was collaborative, fast-paced, and intellectually stimulating. Everyone was approachable and willing to support one another, regardless of seniority, which created a strong sense of teamwork. There was a clear emphasis on learning and development, with frequent feedback and opportunities to ask questions or explore new areas. Despite the demanding nature of the work, the atmosphere remained positive and inclusive, with regular team check-ins, social events, and a shared commitment to delivering high-quality results. Overall, it was a motivating environment that encouraged both personal and professional growth.

  • 6. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
  • I thoroughly enjoyed my internship as it was both challenging and rewarding. The fast-paced environment pushed me to think critically, adapt quickly, and step outside my comfort zone, which made the experience highly engaging. I especially enjoyed being involved in real project work and seeing how my contributions fed into client deliverables. The supportive team culture, exposure to a variety of industries, and constant learning opportunities made each day stimulating. Overall, it was a valuable and enjoyable experience that confirmed my interest in strategy consulting as a career path.

  • My advice to others applying to IBM would be to thoroughly research the company鈥檚 values, business areas, and recent projects so you can tailor your application and show a genuine interest in the role. Make sure to demonstrate a balance of technical ability, problem-solving skills, and a collaborative mindset, as IBM values well-rounded candidates. During interviews, focus on clear, structured communication and back up your answers with specific examples. Lastly, don鈥檛 be afraid to show curiosity and ask thoughtful questions and show enthusiasm for learning, as IBM places a strong emphasis on growth and innovation.
