Overview
I sat in two different departments each for a week and a half. Day to day I was involved in drafting due diligence, reviewing various commercial/ IP contracts, conducting research and preparing documents such as advice notes and engagement letters. I also had the opportunity to sit in on an online court hearing, a client meeting and numerous internal team meetings/ commercial awareness reports. I also had numerous catch ups with my supervisors for feedback.
Skills
New skills I have developed include, adapting communication styles and tone in documents dependent on the intended receiver (such as for a partner, or a client), creating an agenda for tasks and meetings, organising my time and prioritising tasks.
Business Insight
It was insightful to experience the internal culture of the firm, and the dynamics within different teams. The culture is one of friendliness and openness which felt very supportive throughout the internship. It was also inspiring to hear of the career progression opportunities to partner and senior management positions, as well as additional positions which can be gathered through voicing your passions and interests.
Culture
The culture was one of genuine support and friendliness, everyone has great bonds within their teams and externally in other departments and offices. There is a connection between the whole region, facilitated through the OneUK approach and opportunity to work from other offices. From the perspective of an intern, I felt very comfortable in both of the departments in terms of making connections as well as with asking for work and feedback.
Your Impressions
I found the internship truly valuable; learning a lot about the firm, each department, the people and the career progression opportunities. I have developed a lot of key skills required to thrive as a trainee solicitor and feel confident and excited about entering the career. The insight was made also more enjoyable by the external socials organised for the interns and trainees, allowing for external networking and building connections.
Yes
Be yourself, every one in the firm has their own individual experiences/ quirks and these are appreciated by everyone. Also, do not be afraid to make mistakes, there is not an expectation to know all the answers but it is about how you approach this with interest - so do not be afraid to ask questions.
