Overview
Sat in the Finance team for my first week and a half and the Corporate team for my second. I would be regularly allocated tasks from my trainee buddy, supervisor and supervising partner. These tasks involved current matters that the team was working on and included proofreading and research tasks.
Skills
I have developed a number of new skills from this internship. Getting involved regularly in proofreading exercises really developed my attention to detail skills. Working alongside other interns and fee earners on the group presentation and allocated tasks developed communication and teamworking skills and being involved in genuine client matters improved my commercial awareness significantly.
Responsibilities
Considering the fact I was an intern, I was given a substantial amount of responsibility. I was entrusted to draft client emails and conduct research into prospective and current clients. I proofread client contracts that would be sent out to them soon after my read and held a presentation in which the content that my team shared was used for clients.
Support & Guidance
I received much support and guidance throughout the internship. Having a trainee buddy whom I could go to for all my questions and who helped me through all of my tasks was really useful. They were both really eager to help me understand what they worked on and how to complete common trainee tasks. My supervisors were also both super supportive - they explained every task they set in solid detail before sending me away for it and also gave really informative feedback afterwards.
Culture
The culture was lovely. Everyone I asked for a chat was more than willing to speak to me, often giving up to an hour just to answer any questions I had.
Your Impressions
I really enjoyed my placement - it has helped me understand that a career in this field is absolutely the right one for me and given me direction with the regards to the types of firms I am interested in. It was an amazing opportunity to take an inside like at the goings on in a top commercial law firm.
Yes
Do your research of the firm and understand why you want to apply there before you do. Prepare for the Watson Glaser test in advance and have a think about what kinds of questions might come up in the video interview.
