Overview
I was given tasks that would be given to a trainee solicitor (inc. drafting, proofreading, sending emails, etc). This was my first vacation scheme and I felt very supported and integrated into the firm. There were daily check-ins, I had a trainee buddy in each placement to better support me, every task I received was well explained and I felt comfortable asking any questions to anyone. Although it was challenging, the support made it enjoyable.
Skills
I improved my communication skills (both in a team capacity and in a formal capacity); I learned about the different stages in transactions and what documents are needed to successfully complete them; and I improved in my attention to detail (both whilst reviewing documents and drafting).
Business Insight
It was very insightful. Not only did I learn about the depths of each practice group, I also learned about new ones (such as the Knowledge team) which I never knew about. I also learned about all the different sectors and how each practice group is involved in each sector and with each other.
Culture
It was very warm, both in the London induction and in the regional office. As mentioned, the support is undeniable and everyone really tries to get to know you as a person as well as a professional.
Your Impressions
Thoroughly, it completely changed the way I view commercial law and commercial firms. I can acknowledge that it might not be the same in every firm but this reassured my desire to have a career in law.
Yes
When applying make sure you do enough research about the firm to make sure that it is truly the firm for you (for me the in-person experience exceeded my expectations). During the internship, aside from providing good quality work, get to know the team and fully enjoy the culture at DLA.
