Overview
As a Manufacturing Engineering Placement Student at Jaguar Land Rover, I supported daily production operations by designing and implementing tooling solutions, resolving build quality issues, and improving assembly processes. My responsibilities included collaborating with cross-functional teams, conducting root cause analysis, and using CAD and additive manufacturing to develop practical solutions. I regularly engaged with associates on the line, gathered feedback, and ensured that engineering changes were effectively integrated into the production environment to enhance efficiency and product quality.
Skills
During my placement, I developed strong technical skills in CAD, additive manufacturing, and tooling design, alongside practical experience in root cause analysis and structured problem-solving. I enhanced my ability to work collaboratively across departments, communicate technical ideas effectively, and manage engineering projects from concept to implementation. Exposure to real-world manufacturing challenges also strengthened my adaptability, attention to detail, and understanding of quality standards, preparing me for future roles in mechanical and manufacturing engineering.
Responsibilities
Throughout my placement, I was trusted with end-to-end responsibility on several engineering projects, from identifying issues to delivering validated solutions. I led the design and testing of bespoke tooling, coordinated with suppliers and internal teams, and supported implementation on the production line. I was accountable for managing timelines, documenting technical work, and presenting outcomes to senior stakeholders. This level of responsibility developed my confidence, independence, and readiness for professional engineering roles.
Support & Guidance
Support is given when needed, not handed out. If you ask for it you will get it and most people are willing to help even if you have to push a bit. Manager fully supported everything and made things run smoothly.
