Overview
My role involved supporting my team with their jobs, starting and developing some of my own projects using all sorts of different software. I dealt with different areas of the business as well as suppliers. I travelled between sites fairly often to see more parts of the business and to complete some projects.
Skills
Yes, I developed plenty of skills that I had learned at university, such as, CAD, MatLab, Excel, etc. But I also learned plenty of new skills, especially communication skills and learning to deal with people and managing work load.
Responsibilities
Yes, I had to manage my own projects and meetings with suppliers. My manager and my team trusted me to work on the projects alone and make sure to complete them, but always offered help if I ever needed it.
Support & Guidance
Plenty. My team was probably the best work team environment I've ever dealt with and may ever work alongside. They always helped me whenever I needed and always tried to include me in new learning opportunities or anytime they would travel to other sites so that I could experience something new.
Culture
There were so many people that everyday you could meet someone new and make a new acquaintance. The company is very diverse with all sorts of cultures and communities within that anyone would be able to find the community they feel at home with. If you carry a positive attitude, everyone around you will reflect it too.
Your Impressions
I really enjoyed it. Got to experience opportunities that I never expected to be apart of. The general placement was really good, but what made me truly enjoy it was the team I landed in. They took me in from day one and taught me most of what I learned during the year.
Yes
Ask questions, never feel you're being stupid, someone else is probably wanting to ask the same question but people will love to teach you and explain to you what they do. Make sure to go out of your comfort zone and try to maintain a social life with work too so that you enjoy what you do even more.
