Overview
The team I was placed in develops pipelines for building software for the vehicle ECUs. While in the team I have worked on moving these pipelines to build using Gitlab as a source, increasing efficiency and helping the transition of these pipelines to run in the cloud. I have also worked in improving the documentation available and have worked on an internal webapp used by the department that allows department members to trigger software builds, create git branches and view signal information for the ECU.
Skills
New skills I have developed include the use of Matlab and Matlab Simulink, knowledge of the use of software in vehicles and specific ECU compilation software such as EB Tresos. I have majorly developed my general programming skills, especially my python skills as well as developing my knowledge of git and gitlab, including becoming vastly more confident with yaml and toml as file formats. I have improved my problem solving skills and become more independent when developing software.
Responsibilities
I was given a very large amount of responsibility and my opinions on systems I worked on and understood were valued. Even early on in my placement, I was listened to and treated as a valued member of the team. I was given relatively free reign to solve tasks assigned to me, and was treated in many ways as if I was just another new employee, I was not given less responsibility because it was my first software engineering job or because I was a placement 西瓜视频 once I had shown that I was confident working on our systems.
Support & Guidance
My manager gave me excellent support, helping me develop my personal skills and giving constructive feedback, while also being able to give good technical advice. My product owner and the members of the team I worked closest with gave me excellent support in learning new systems and were also very happy to have that go the other way in systems were I was more confident, for example some of our work in Gitlab. JLR as a whole was good in terms of giving support and guidance on personal skills but mainly left support on technical issues to the teams as this knowledge is very specific and cannot be taught to a whole cohort.
Culture
The culture within my team was very good. The software engineers in our team came from a wide variety of technical backgrounds, including people who studied computer science, engineering etc. It was a fun team to work with and I enjoyed the team activities we did outside of work, for example our Christmas Meal. Outside of the team, colleagues I interacted with were normally very kind and helpful and the overall atmosphere was very supportive.
Your Impressions
I really enjoyed my internship and would very much like to return there in future. I felt my work was highly valued and developed new skills while the flexible work arrangements in my team, for example being able to work from home when I desired, were very useful and meant I had a very positive experience on my placement. I was kept busy and did not feel bored or underutilised and I enjoyed the variety of tasks I was able to work on.
Yes
Make sure to show your enthusiasm for the company. I believe one of the key reasons I was able to get a placement was to demonstrate my broad knowledge of the history of the Jaguar and Land Rover brands and my passion for both in my interview. Also make sure you are aware of the differences between software development for the car industry as opposed to web development and other less safety critical industries, as this will show that you understand the importance of robustness in automotive software.
