    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • From day to day, I was responsible for managing the hybrid subassembly line, dealing with any issues that arose and streamlining processes. I also facilitated changes to processes, parts, and tools, where I was the final barrier before those changes broke onto the line. I performed administrative work on process documentation. I often conducted production trials for new parts and processes, analysing how changes would affect process efficiency.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • I've developed my manufacturing and process engineering greatly beyond the foundations laid in University. I learnt Six Sigma and DMAIC problem solving skills to apply to real-world situation in the factory. Of course, I developed teamwork and communication skills by operating in a close-knit team and often communicating cross-functionally.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • I was given the big responsibility of overseeing the Hybrid subassembly line only two months in to my role. I was eased into it with the aid of my manager and colleagues, until I could manage the responsibility myself.

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • I received plenty of support and guidance in my placement in relation to my role. In relation to personal support, there were advertised channels, but they could use some improvement as you currently have to go through management which may not be comfortable.

    Your Impressions

  • 6. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
  • I mostly enjoyed my placement. I would have preferred a slightly later start (hours were 7-3:30), and the office space was old, lacking natural light and having broken air-conditioning.
