    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • My main role is working in Engineering Quality, involving looking at improving engineering processes. Currently helping to build an internal app to replace a current tool. Day-to-day will be involved with meetings, also developing knowledge of processes surrounding the relevant process so that when developing/improving the process, everything is aligned. Also worked in a CAE team performing CFD tasks, using skills I had developed at university. Roles can vary across the business, lots of opportunity available to try out something different.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • I have developed a huge number of my skills, improving upon technical knowledge that I began to learn at university, but also in sectors where I previously had no experience. Have been challenged to push and develop other skills such as presenting, working with different stakeholders, and adapting to different ways of working in different teams (eg. some teams work more in Agile than others). Had lots of support from my manager for skills development.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • I was given an increased amount of responsibility according to my time at the company. The more I had learnt, the more I was able to prove that I could handle the responsibilities given to me. With time, given opportunities to deliver tasks for stakeholders and present in meetings. My role however did not have as much responsibility attached compared to other undergraduates who were involved in things like testing etc.

  • Please rate how meaningful the work you were doing was
  • 5/5

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • Had a great amount of support, there is a strong early careers system in place to assist but I was lucky enough to work in a great team who were always happy to teach me things and support me, my manager also pushed for me to develop my skills in both my strengths and weak areas. Even outside of my team, almost everyone who I have interacted with has been happy to help and support me with tasks.

  • How would you rate the support and guidance from your line manager?
  • 5/5

  • How would you rate the support and guidance from the wider team?
  • 5/5

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • Company culture was very inclusive and supportive. I worked in a diverse team who all encouraged me and my personal growth. I was made to feel like my ideas and contributions mattered. It can of course depend on which team you are in and which site you work at but overall it was incredibly positive. I was lucky that my manager did a lot to support me, but I do know that a couple of the other undergrads received less support than I did and struggled to gain responsibilities.

  • 5/5

    Your Impressions

  • 6. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
  • I have really enjoyed my last 12 months, I've met lots of great people who I will remain friends with, especially those who I discovered go to the same university as me but who I hadn't met before. The social aspect was what really surprised me, as I did always expect to learn lots about the industry and develop my skills coming into this placement, but the culture and social aspect was what really set the year apart- I will miss it when I am in my final year at uni!

  • 7. Would you recommend JLR to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 8. What advice would you give to others applying to JLR
  • 'Be yourself' is really clich茅 advice, but there is a reason that all of the people that has been hired in the last couple of years are all incredibly nice to interact with. It's so important to be enthusiastic about your work and friendly to the people you work with, the more you can make that shine throughout your application process the better- in my opinion! Once here, make sure you take advantage of all the resources a big company has to offer, make sure you do different types of training, try out different roles, take part in the wider things that the early careers team have to offer!
