    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • Lead the planning and execution of media plans: brief, deliver and track campaigns, present media sign offs, coordinate feedback. Manage the budget and report on spend across EU markets. Conduct monthly competitor reports across social media activity. Present updates to external partners and seek new opportunities. Onboard new agencies and establish ways of working across multiple product categories. Coordinate influencer content with full asset delivery management.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • During my placement, I have developed my communication and networking skills by presenting to senior stakeholders both internally and externally. I have also developed my organisation and prioritisation skills when working across multiple brands and working towards tight deadlines. I have learnt new skills in budget management and financial forecasting and improved my knowledge of Microsoft Excel and Power BI. I have also created content on Canva which is a software I had not used before my placement.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • Yes, I was given lots of responsibility during my placement which helped my develop my leadership and problem solving skills. I was responsible for leading media campaigns, managing external relationships and budget tracking, but I was provided support from my manager whenever necessary. This allowed me to work on projects with real impact which helped develop my industry knowledge.

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • I received a lot of support during my placement. When I first joined, all IPs attended a two-day induction which was helpful in gaining an understanding of the company and networking with other IPs. When I joined my team, I received support and training from my line manager and the current IP which helped me understand my role and responsibilities. Throughout my placement, I had weekly connects with my manager who supported me with any questions or challenges.

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • The company culture was very welcoming, friendly and inclusive. There are lots of opportunities to socialise within your team and also the wider teams and this was a great way to meet new people. There is a large future careers community at Unilever, so there are lots of people who are at a similar stage in their career.

    Your Impressions

  • 6. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
  • I really enjoyed my placement and gained invaluable experience that has helped me develop both personally and professionally. I was able to put my knowledge learnt at University into practice in a real world setting at a global company. The dynamic nature of the FMCG industry helped me learn how to work in a fast paced environment and I have learnt skills that I will take forward into my future career.

  • 8. What advice would you give to others applying to Unilever
  • Take every opportunity that is presented to you and get involved as much as possible. This is a great way to learn and meet new people and you might even discover a new passion. Build your professional network both internally and externally and always ask for feedback. Try and gain a deep understanding of how the business works as this will help you find what interests you most and what opportunities are available to you.
