Overview
I operate amongst a diverse team of some of JLR's most competitive and comprehensive problem solvers in the business. I worked on a range of projects including future Defender products. Day to day I make use of Catia V6, drawing 2D sections and 3D surfaces problem solving, as well as this I spend a lot of time away from the desk communicating with a range of people across the business.
Skills
On this placement year I have grown massively in my confidence in presenting geometry, communicating with people across the business, networking and taking initiative. There are other skills like Catia V6, basic automotive design understanding and automotive problem solving that I have learnt fresh this year - these have been massively helpful for me creating a positive impact and helping my team with their day to day challenges.
Responsibilities
At the beginning of the placement I was given leadership of an aero part (air duct) on a future Defender, comparing that to the end of my placement I have been given ownership of a whole vehicle concept layout - this clearly highlights my progression and studio engineering competency over my 12 months at JLR
Support & Guidance
I received lots of support from the management in my team, plus I was assigned a mentor who was massively helpful and impactful for not only my CAD knowledge and learning but my understanding of the business, respective teams we correspond with and knowing who to contact for what help / guidance / information
Culture
The company are very supportive of young people like myself and trying to take all the key skills (ingredients) that we hold and mould them into a career / respective job role (cake). The atmosphere in meetings is generally supportive towards younger people, however this can be dependent on what type of forum discussions are happening in.
Your Impressions
I have really grafted this year, learnt lots, said yes to lots of opportunities and really built up a baseline understanding of automotive design and feel that I can look back on this 12 months at JLR with a lot of pride, knowing that I put in the effort and don't have any regrets.
Yes
Make sure to prioritise showcasing your skills and understanding of different design techniques, processes as well as the wins and failures in project work. It's key that the interviewers here see that you're not scared to fail, not scared to give something a go and that you're willing to try and problem solve even if the outcome isn't right first time.
