Overview
Lab-based role conducting experiments on the solubility of a range of chemicals. Involves planning experiments, using analytical techniques to measure solubility and processing and analysing data.
Skills
My role involves the use of spectroscopic techniques which I have developed proficiency in. I have also developed my existing general laboratory skills through practice. Outside of the lab, I have learned how to write up summaries of my experiments, and I have had many opportunities to present my work which has taught me how to communicate concisely as well as to engage in discussion on the topic.
Responsibilities
I was responsible for most of the planning and execution of my project, with some support provided by my supervisor. I was also given the opportunity to present part of a workshop delivered by my team, and was responsible for preparing my slides.
Support & Guidance
I received excellent training: for the first half of the year I was accompanied by my supervisor in the lab and she gave me guidance and support. I was also able to shadow other team members and they helped me with general techniques. My line manager scheduled regular check-ins where we discussed the amount of support I was getting, and was also on-hand with any questions I had. The entire team were very helpful.
Culture
The atmosphere was supportive and collaborative. I felt that I could go to anyone in my office with a question and they would do their best to help me. I felt very welcomed. My line manager encouraged me to take on responsibility, and at the same time made sure to check in with how I was handling my workload, and I never felt I had too much on my plate or I wasn't supported.
Your Impressions
I really enjoyed my time at Unilever. I gained really valuable skills that I will take forward in my career. I also met many friends through Unilever that made the experience of relocating much easier.
