Overview
I am managing a project, so my day usually consists of obtaining progress reports from my technical teams and making sure that we are still moving in accordance with our timeline. It is my job to facilitate the development, meaning I will communicate with the customers to align with specifications and technical information, and pass on to the technical teams to ensure they have what they need.
Skills
The main skill I have developed is my leadership. As a project manager, I have been placed as the lead of certain developments, and have come to understand the responsibility that comes with it. There are a lot of organisational skills that are required for capable leadership that I have developed over my time on placement.
Responsibilities
I was given a lot of responsibility on my placement, leading projects and getting used to people depending on me in order to do their jobs. It was made clear to me that if I neglected my role, it would impact not only the development of my project, but the reviews and reports of my team.
Support & Guidance
Initially I received a lot of guidance from my manager; we would have regular - almost daily - calls, but as my placement went on, she supported me less and gave me the opportunity to branch out and seek my own solutions to problems instead of asking her.
Culture
Incredibly friendly and welcoming. I felt like I was surrounded by people that I could have friendly off-topic discussions with, and had many interesting conversations and interactions. The events that took place throughout the year were also great, often involving meeting a lot of new people and doing various activities
Your Impressions
I enjoyed it thoroughly. Though there were moments that were quite stressful or intense, there were many more moments where I was celebrating wins with my team, or witnessing effort that I put into a project garner results. I've also met many amazing people and made some genuine friends.
Yes
Be yourself and bring your unique voice to the company. The culture of the company revolves around a level of non-conformity and authenticity to yourself that makes every meeting and every interaction unique and different from the last. Unilever is not the place to become a corporate husk, it's the place to learn more about yourself and express your individuality in a professional environment
