Overview
Typically involves keeping current projects running smoothly, doing research tasks on what is happening in the work environment which could impact employee health and wellbeing, as well as being involved in the planning and carrying out several activation events and health awareness promotions throughout the year. Unilever has a lot of initiatives running all the time so there is a lot to get involved in over the year, both for employee mental and physical wellbeing.
Skills
Yes definitely. I've learnt to think about public engagement and targeting particular demographics through advertisements and events to help get people taking proactive measures to protect their health. I've developed team working skills a lot and seen how a large global organisation works, and how teams work when located in different countries. I've learnt computer skills and learnt more about how to develop my AI understanding too which is very important in the future.
Responsibilities
I was given a fair amount of responsibility. I was never left completely on my own without support from line managers, for example when I owned my own project, I still got guidance and help from my line manager on the direction to take and if I felt stuck I never was hesitant to ask for advice. I felt like my work was valued by the team throughout my placement and that I was somewhat responsible for the results.
Support & Guidance
I received a lot of support all throughout my placement. My team as a whole was very supportive and wanted me to get the best experience and gain as much as I could and both my line managers wanted me to pursue my interests and get insight into different parts of the job and organisation as a whole. I never felt that I was left to figure things out by myself, as everyone was very open and warm.
Culture
The company atmosphere was quite changeable, but there was a strong community within teams and functions. For example regular briefing calls helped to create a sense of community as it kept people updated and familiar with what was happening. It was a positive experience to see how trust and positive sentiment is formed and broken in an large organisation on like Unilever. Overall it felt like there was a high level of motivation in the company.
Your Impressions
I did enjoy my placement at Unilever as it gave me a valuable insight into working in a company of this scale and the challenges and positive parts of it. It was however a turbulent time in the company so this did impact my overall experience. I got to witness and be part of a lot of meaningful processes and projects which was important to me. And the team environment was positive and was helpful.
Yes
I would say to showcase your personality and interests, which align with whatever function you are going for. They want to see who you really are. Also, do your research into the company and try to match up with these. Be thoughtful if you are asked to do any group activities and reflect on your behaviour honestly if asked. I would also say to be future focused. It is a different application process so take it as it comes.
