Overview
My role involved lots to do with excel and data. I joined at the time of restructuring so I made org charts, simplified and analysed data on excel. Made PowerPoints for presentation of business as usual activities like analysing the annual survey feedback of employees. I also conducted a series which linked to wellbeing of employees during the time of restructuring to ensure support is given to employees. I also make sure employee data is correct on the system.
Skills
Yes I have learnt lots of new skills to name a few. I believe during my placement I got to interact with a wide range of employees particularly from different cultural backgrounds and age groups. This helped me develop good communication and open mindedness skills. I was also having to multitask and divide my time fairly so I gained time management skills. Alongside the busy lifestyle, I got out of my comfort zone to initiate socials that helped me gain more confidence.
Responsibilities
Yes I was given a lot of responsibility and ownership during my placement at Unilever. I led projects solo and also helped alongside existing projects. Whilst helping, I was accountable for my actions and involvement. My team really appreciated when I brought in new ideas and knowledge to the table and encouraged me to bring forward any questions I have. I was also allowed to be flexible with my timings as far as I fulfilled the requirement and completed my tasks.
Support & Guidance
I received a lot of support and guidance during my placement. Both from Unilever and my placements team at university. They were constant check-ins with my line manager wherein they understood my requirements and goals as well as discussed what they have planned for me. I was also allowed to take time off when I was not keeping well even if it involved me missing office days or postponing meetings that were scheduled. Overall, employee health and wellbeing is given utmost importance.
Culture
The company atmosphere and environment was super friendly. Everyone was welcoming and excited to teach me new things such as excel functions, ways of working etc. Even though I joined at the time of productivity wherein employees were being laid off, everyone always had a smile on their face and took out the time to support me whenever I needed. Over the course of 12 months I can say I have made lots of memories and healthy relationships.
Your Impressions
I thoroughly enjoyed and am thankfully to be able to experience my placement year at Unilever. It has made me see the ins and outs of corporate life. I have been able to be involved in so many different tasks and events that made me network and learn more about the company. I would love to work for this company again and experience more opportunities. I 100% recommend considering doing a placement year here for a wholistic experience.
Yes
I would advice very basic and simple things to anyone who applies here. Firstly, to go in with a broad and open mindset. It is very important to learn and gain experience following the feedback you receive from others around you. Secondly, seek projects and tasks to be involved in, as people are busy and it is important venture out of you comfort zone to seek knowledge and experience. Lastly, be honest about your expectations from your placement with your line manager. Tell them what you aim to achieve as seniors really appreciate focused individuals.
