The Role
I have really enjoyed my placement with Hays; I have gained and developed excellent transferrable skills and I now feel really confident to apply for gradudate schemes and jobs after University.
Hays is a very supportive environment to work in where learning and helping each other is encouraged at all times. After 4 months into my placement it was nice to see new starters and even exisiting members of staff who had been here longer than myself approach me for help and advice in certain areas of work.
The internship at Hays was very structured for the first 6 months of my placement. I had regular performance reviews and one-to-one sessions with colleagues, my mentor and my manager which was really useful and important to aid my development thoroughout my placement and to access my performance.
I managed the temporary contracts for the Office Support team which meant I never knew how many jobs I would be recruiting for at any one time. I enjoyed this as this meant that every day in the office was never the same and the work load was very varied throughout my placement however I was extremely busy during some periods (but this made the day go quickly!).
I was given full responsibility to manage the temporary contracts for Office Support. This involved managing the candidate attraction process of registering candidates over the phone and then arranging an interivew in the office. It also involved managing the client management process of registering jobs over the phone and arranging client visits. I was also involved in managing my current temporary workers and conducting aftercare calls and visits.
I feel that I have gained and developed skills which will not only assist me for when I return to University and to apply for future jobs but also for life. The placement at Hays exposes you to so many areas (e.g. interviewing candidates and meeting clients on sites) and provides you with the opportunity to develop excellent skills and allows you to create your own brand of service within Hays. My placement has also provided me with a lot of confidence to take on new challenges in the future.
The Company
Hays is a target driven environment to work in. The office ran frequent incentive days to encourage activity throughout the office and to create a 'buzz' in the atmosphere. At times you do have to work under pressure but on the whole the office has a great atmosphere to work in.
The first 6 months of the placement were very structured and organised with set performance reviews and meetings to monitor my performance and progress in the role.
I was very impressed that Hays had set up two training modules that all of the interns were invited to attend in London. It showed that Hays were looking to invest in their interns and it was a great opportunity to meet other interns from other offices in the UK at the training in London.

Hays has a very clear promotional path set out which is articulated at assessment stage from day one. I have always been made very aware that Hays are welcome to and encourage their interns to return to the company after they have completed their final year of University provided that they have performed well during the placement. I would consider returning to Hays in the future but to the internal recruitment side of the business.
The Culture
Hays had a brilliant Christmas party in York for the North East and Yorkshire region which was really good fun. Hays is quite a socialable place to work, every now and again we go out for meals within our teams after work or go out for drinks on Friday after work.
Living in Newcastle is quite cheap on the whole and drinks are reasonablly priced.
Newcastle is a great place to go out and is known for its nightlife!
This was not something that was organised.
