The Role
One of the criteria in the placement is to be a 'people person' therefore I loved the positive sales atmosphere, meeting new people and holding interviews myself.
Since the first day I've been treated as an equal to my colleagues and once I'd picked things up and learnt the system, the responsibilities I had were the exact same those I worked with. As my market knowledge and understanding of recruitment increased, my opinion was asked for more and more. In all - yes, I felt very valued!
My manager was always very supportive through advice and on-the-job training. However, if she wasn't available everyone around me was always willing to help. Each month I would have a review with my manager to go through my performance in the last period and what the plan was for the coming period. This meant I always knew where I stood in terms of what I did well and what to improve on. There were a number of training days for interns held in central London as well which were always useful and meant I could meet interns from other parts of the business.
Hays is a very fast-paced and busy environment, which I liked as it was quite exciting. How busy I was depended on a number of factors, mainly being how many jobs I was working on at any given time. There is always something to be doing and it can be a case of spinning plates at times to ensure that I kept in contact with my clients regularly through meetings and phone calls whilst also ensuring that I had a high quality of candidates readily available for a job to be working on.
I am responsible for the recruitment of junior finance professionals across a specific geographic area. This means that I am fully responsible for maintaining relationships with key contacts across the area and to be able to provide them with suitable candidates when they have vacancies. Therefore I run through CV's and applications, hold telephone conversations, book interviews with those I feel are the best and hold the one-to-one interviews myself. I then speak to my clients, arrange meetings with them, take the best CV's with me and sell in the candidates that are the best fit for the role, all in the aim to place a candidate and get a placement fee from the company to hit my sales targets.
Based on the responsibilities mentioned, I have significantly developed a number of skills including organisation, problem solving, sales technique, team work and communication. I am now extremely confident in finding a job at the end of my degree as I feel the skillset I now have sets me apart from the average graduate as I have seen many times from working within recruitment. From interviewing candidates and meeting with professionals, I now have the knowledge and understanding how best to prepare for an interview and how to come across in person. I'm able to build rapport with various people, from school leavers to 拢80k Finance Directors.
The Company
The atmosphere is very work-hard play-hard. Due to the nature of the job, everyone is very sociable and lively which makes for usually quite a noisy and talkative atmosphere. The end of a sales period and pay day are always great days for drinks after work! (Not that they need much convincing)
Monthly reviews, regular targets and an opportunity to progress to becoming a 'Talent Scout' to recruit the next year of placement 西瓜视频s. My manager and director were always clear in my responsibilities and how my role would progress but (although it didn't concern me in anyway) there was a slight lack of communication with the internal recruitment team.
My Manager and each person I have worked alongside have all given me advice, training constructive criticism and techniques which now, after being at Hays for a year, I completely understand the geographical area and market that I recruit for and the types of roles and responsibilities required that are most sought after by clients. It has now got to the stage that because of the investment in me, there will be a dip in sales for my specialism and region that I cover as my replacement will not have the market insight and skillset that I have. It's nice to know that I'll be missed by my manager!

The development and responsibilities are incredible and I won't get the same kind of development or training in a future role and any other position is likely to not be as fun as this placement. However, any future decision on coming back to Hays will be based around salary. They have let me know or a number of occasions that I would be welcomed back into Hays which is great to hear.
The Culture
Although in my particular office there weren't any other interns, I got along really well with everyone there. It helps that they were all recently 西瓜视频s and are only a few years older and so were very social people with a great sense of humour. I felt comfortable with my colleagues across the whole year and would often go for drinks after work with them.
I lived in South West London and so the price of both living and socialising were quite high, however this is the first time I've had an annual salary (as opposed to working behind a bar) and so the costs of living etc evened out across the year roughly and I did save enough to be able to go away in the summer.
Because of the area I work in in London, there are a number of great bars with outside and rooftop areas overlooking the river which was great on the sunnier evenings.
Everyone is always up for socialising after a long day of work and roughly each month there will be an organised work night out. There are also networking events, and even charity events including dinners and team fundraising activities. However, in terms of weekend activities these are few and far between.
