Overview
I worked as part of the Process and Controls team (risk consulting) within Banking and Capital Markets. I participated in a number of audits, mainly smaller and short-term tasks, although I did have the opportunity to do a longer piece of work completing some workpapers. I also worked alongside the four other interns in my team on a case study, which was a simulation of an internal audit, concluding in a final presentation. I participated in internal meetings, shadowed partners, and visited client site in Cardiff.
Skills
Communication skills, Excel and technical skills (including AI and use of internal company tools), presentation and public speaking skills, networking, written communication.
Responsibilities
Yes, the workload and level or task varied throughout the internship, but I was given a chance to work on real audits and provide feedback on company proposals. Those more senior in the team checked my work before it was sent to the client, but I had the opportunity to work independently and show what I can do.
Support & Guidance
I received a lot of support and guidance. We had a full week of induction at the start of the internship when we learnt the basics of internal audit. I was assigned a counsellor (a senior manager) within the team who managed my work and collated my feedback. I also had a buddy (a graduate) who was on hand to answer any questions. I had regular meetings with both of these people as well as others in the team.
Culture
Very positive and friendly, we were invited to socials, attended group lunches and meetings, and were generally welcomed into the team. The buddy and counsellor system in particular made me feel welcome and part of the team.
Your Impressions
I really enjoyed it. It was a great insight into the corporate world, allowed me to form valuable connections within my team, and gave me the opportunity to experience a wide range of opportunities.
Yes
Take practice assessments, be open to new opportunities and fields that you hadn't considered, be willing to learn, do not worry about past academic background/experience in consulting or financial services.
