    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • Work in small teams to deliver software solutions that can aid customers within the bank with their day-to-day jobs in technology. Day-to-day this involves attendings planning, retrospective and stand-up meetings, as well as defining project requirements and designing and implementing a solution. My role is also to learn and take part in different learning courses available to improve my professional and technical skills. I also have meetings with leaders in different areas in the bank to better understand the context of my team and how different teams coexist and work together

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • I have continued to develop my soft skills such as time management, communication and team working through manging my calendar on a daily/weekly basis and many of my tasks taking part as part of group projects working together with other interns. On top of this I have strengthened my skills using tools such as Git and Jira I have also developed technical skills working on projects that are brand new to me, improving my problem solving skills and programming skills with technologies such as python, java and nodejs

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • I have been given responsibility as part of a team to deliver on multiple different projects, with responsibility to manage my own time and reach out to my manager, buddy or teammates if I need assistance with anything. This has been good because it is not an overwhelming amount of pressure placed on myself, but I am still required to deliver on these projects I'm participating on, though not without support. But I was not made responsible for any core operations

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • Received great support and help from multiple different sources within the internship. This includes my line manager, members of my team, other interns, my buddy on the graduate scheme, other graduates and of course the early talent team at NatWest. I have weekly catch-up meetings with my line manager, my buddy and the early talent team to check in and make sure that everything is going ok in the internship program for me. We always participate in calls with grads from other areas who talk to us about general experiences as a grad in the bank

  • How would you rate the support and guidance from the wider team?

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • Company culture and general atmosphere has been nothing short of fantastic. Everyone I have met whether it be my line manager, my team, early talent, those on graduate placement, other interns an any other employees of the bank I have met have been extremely kind and welcoming. It has been very easy to settle in and I have been made to feel like a valued part of the organisation at all times. Many people have sacrificed time from their busy schedules to speak to myself and other interns to help welcome us and get to know us personally

    Your Impressions

  • 6. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
  • I have thoroughly enjoyed my placement. The office space is brilliant, the people have been great and very friendly and welcoming and the work I have undertaken has been both varied and exciting. I have met people in roles I did not know would have existed previously and have been given very enjoyable introductions to many areas of the bank which helped contextualise a lot of things. The social aspect has been great with the graduate connect councils organising many social and sporting events to take part in and meet people outside of a workplace environment

  • 7. Would you recommend NatWest Group to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 8. What advice would you give to others applying to NatWest Group
  • Take the time to read up on the selection process ahead of time so you are well prepared and know what to expect. Make sure to especially prepare potential interview questions and answers if you are able to make an assessment centre. Your professional and soft skills are being assessed as much as your technical skills and therefore do not overlook these and equally don't doubt yourself and you abilities if you are not as confident with your technical skills. Lastly be curious and ask plenty questions if you get the chance in an interview.
