Overview
I work on audits, doing data entry and review for different projects, based on what is assigned by my manager. Looking at payroll, income, financial statements, expenditure, contracts to exercise due diligence.
Skills
Excel skills have been strongly developed, as well as attention to detail and thinking critically. Audit also helps to learn a lot about finance, and how companies work.
Responsibilities
I was given real tasks for real clients from the start. Audit work is always reviewed many times over, which gives juniors more flexibility to work on key tasks. That said, there were also a lot of training tasks as the nature of the work is complex.
Support & Guidance
My line manager did weekly catch ups to check in, which helped me feel like I was making progress and was able to share my thoughts. The team as a whole was very supportive and took the time to teach me everything I asked about. Perhaps a bit more support from my buddy is my only note.
Culture
Company culture was great, everyone was very friendly and relaxed, not micromanaging and trusting that work will get done. The office was often very empty as a lot of people work from home, but on team days, once or twice a week, the whole team comes in and it is a great time to catch up.
Your Impressions
I very much enjoyed my internship, our first two days were an induction in Birmingham with the cohort of interns, which was a lovely way to kick things off and discover the culture of the company. However, after this, social opportunities for interns dwindled almost completely, especially coming from a smaller office and having the weekly virtual catch ups between interns being cancelled. The work was great however, and I loved the office. I feel like I have learnt a lot!
Yes
Be yourself - they are looking for proactive and social personalities, with the mentality that hard skills can be taught, so make sure to relax during the interview and showcase your personality.
