    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • My role involves aiding with and managing small scale projects to help with the development of machinery here. This ranges from using industry 3d printing, to using CAD. I also do work on excel and word often, when updating and creating databases/ making presentation slides. My role also includes presenting meetings and helping with the intern led activities we do here. I also manage the "prototype Room" workspace in my team alongside another intern I work with.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • I have learnt many new skills I will bring with me back to university. One of the main ones being 3d Printing (or rapid prototyping). Many people have outdated views on the software and technology, seeing it more as an arts and crafts tool than an engineering tool. I have developed my knowledge since being here and can now turn an idea into a functioning part through 3d printing in a very short amount of time. I have also developed my professional skills with regards to presenting. CAD has also been a strong development point.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • Yes I was, although I wish at points It had been more. Failure to be given responsibility sometimes led to projects taking longer than they needed too, and then this being blamed on myself when I hadn't caused the delay. For the most part I was given the responsibility though, which meant I could fully use my skillset and show off what I can do. Better communication may have fixed any issues had here.

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • There was always support if I needed it, however I have not always felt the best supported. I feel like sometimes there is no option to find support from the right people because of travel requirements, or being busy. It sometimes made me feel like my skills weren't being used to their full potential. There have been many team members that have always provided support however, so there was always support available, just not always from the right people. I feel like I was often treated like another member of the team. This is great in some ways as you feel included, but at the end of the day I am here for experience and am still a 西瓜视频, not a qualified engineer. This I feel let to some very high expectations with jobs I had never done before.

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • The general atmosphere is really good here. The interns have a strong little team together and meet for lunch daily. We all get along really well and have supported each other throughout the placement. On a wider note, there are some great people around to offer support on whatever you may need. Even little things like the people in the post room that you speak to occasionally, will always try put a smile on your face. I can't fault how positive the vast majority of people are here at BAT

    Your Impressions

  • 6. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
  • I had a lot of fun and it has given me a lot of motivation going forward. I think this year has made me more eager for final year at uni. I had fun with tasks given, even if maybe I feel like there could've been better support at times. Projects have all been a good learning point for me, and I have gained experience on lots of things I never thought I would. I think the people skills gained have been my favorite bit, as I feel like I can fit into a professional work setting anywhere now, which helps with nerves.

  • 7. Would you recommend BAT to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 8. What advice would you give to others applying to BAT
  • I would say to bring the passion you have for your subject area and just be kind. As I said previously, the vast majority of teams here are super friendly and helpful, and someone passionate will fit in well anywhere here. I would also say to them to figure out more concrete details on the projects they may be working on, as it will give them a far better idea on what the work will look like.
