    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • Overall my role is centered around a main project, whether this is designing CAD, ordering parts to be machined, wiring electronics and making contact with suppliers and other third parties. Some side tasks involving raising PO requests, assisting with machine setup in the workshop and taking part in training to improve my technical skills.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • I have developed my CAD skills greatly through proper solid works training with SolidSolutions essentials course. From experienced coworkers I have been taught to use HMI screens and interface devices with PLC controllers, which was all new to me. My general presentation and networking skills have also been developed by multiple events through the year.

I was leading the project, set a budget and timeline in meetings with the department that would receive the machine I was building, designed CAD, designed electronics, organised parts ordering, organised manufacturing with a third party, took part in the construction and created all the documentation.

Other events just for fun often happened, such as meals with my team bimonthly and occasional onsite fun events. General atmosphere is that everyone wants to be here and work hard.

  • Show an interest. Even if you do not know how to do a task, the staff here are happy to give you the resources to learn and practice. There are lots of experts in different areas here and they all are happy to show you what they do. To stay on top of the work when balancing multiple projects definitely use a tool like Trello or a To Do list to keep track.
