    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • During my placement year I was involved with several projects, both supporting and leading these projects. I also supported with sample preparation for studies. Day to day, this involved experimental design, interacting with other teams and external companies to organise testing, data analysis and interpretation, and report writing.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • I have developed my presentation skills, as well as my confidence. Interacting and presenting to others not with a chemistry background and learning to convey they information without going into too much detail. I have also improved my time management skills, experimental design skills and ability to interact with others in a professional environment

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • I was given control of my project, in terms of the experimental design, though the general direction of the project was already decided as it had to link with the overall aims for the group of projects in the topic. I was given as much responsibility as I felt comfortable with, as the year progressed I took on more responsibility, picking up an additional project and supporting other members of the team.

  • Please rate how meaningful the work you were doing was

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • I received as much support and guidance as I needed, both from my line manager, team and the placement team. At the start of the year I needed more support and guidance as I was new to the role and getting to know the company and work environment, but as I grew more comfortable and confidant, I needed a bit less support and guidance, though the option was still there if I needed it.

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • The culture and general atmosphere in the company is great, everyone is very welcoming and accommodating. If I had any questions about a different part of the business, I was able to reach out to someone and they were usually willing meet with me to explain a topic, providing they had time to do so.

  • 8. What advice would you give to others applying to BAT
  • Be open to opportunities. You get as much out of your year as you want too, if you want to improve a skill, make sure you place yourself in a position you can work on that constantly, and be honest with yourself, if you are struggling with meeting deadlines, mention it to your manager to try and work something out with them
