Overview
The A&O Shearman First Year Insight Programme offered a structured and engaging introduction to the work of an international commercial law firm. Over the course of two days, we attended a series of talks, workshops, and networking sessions. Each day began with keynote presentations from partners or senior associates, followed by interactive sessions focusing on specific areas of law and the firm鈥檚 global practice. Highlights included 鈥淎natomy of a Deal: Finance in the Net-Zero Space鈥, which walked us through the lifecycle of a finance transaction, and 鈥淪potlight: Global Financial Markets鈥, where we explored the firm鈥檚 role in shaping market developments. We also took part in a personal development workshop led by TLC Lions, which focused on values-driven leadership and inclusion. The programme provided regular opportunities to ask questions, engage with lawyers across different departments, and build a clear understanding of A&O Shearman鈥檚 culture, values, and international outlook.
Skills
Yes, the programme helped me develop a range of skills. I improved my commercial awareness by exploring how legal teams contribute to complex cross-border transactions, particularly in the finance and energy sectors. The group sessions enhanced my teamwork and communication skills, as we discussed legal scenarios and shared ideas with peers. Listening to lawyers speak about their career journeys and asking questions in networking sessions also boosted my confidence in professional conversations. The TLC Lions workshop encouraged self-reflection and helped me better understand the importance of empathy, resilience, and inclusive leadership within the legal profession.
