    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I genuinely enjoyed my time at Willis Towers Watson. The work is generally rewarding, with the majority of tasks both interesting and a great opportunity to learn. Some tasks are a bit more remedial, but that's to be expected as an intern; luckily I'd say only 10% of the tasks came under this category. The most enjoyable part of the internship work: 5 of us (all investment interns) worked together over about 6 weeks and produced a 30 minute presentation that we did together. Outside of work; the team had casual drinks/pub quiz/summer socials, I'd say I spent time with my team outside of work 10-12 times in 8 weeks; it is very social!

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • There is a noticeably flat hierarchy at WTW. I felt valued from day 1 in the office as people made an effort to learn about my background and get to know me personally. They are really understanding of the inexperience you have at the start and are patient and willing to help you with setting up and all kinds of task. The ability to talk to high-up consultants and directors in the office is great, and they do take time out to give you feedback.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • You get given a 'buddy' at the start, generally a grad who has a year or two of experience. They are fantastic at showing you around the office, introducing you to people they are friends with (so you have people to talk to inside and outside of your team when you're at socials/lunch/etc.). They set you up with a desk and laptop, take you to lunch and help you with any setting up exercises. Throughout the internship all the grads give training and advice, and those are the people you work with most directly.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • Because of the intern-specific projects that you get to do, you can always keep yourself busy. 2-3 times in the first couple of weeks I ran out of things to do and spent an hour or so reading/researching to improve my knowledge of the industry. For the bulk however I was busy enough; a normal working day of 9-5 (1hr for lunch) would be full (2/3 client work and 1/3 internship projects). Towards the end when more deadlines approached (for both myself and the rest of the team) the main change was less flexibility with what tasks to do - there were more short, ad hoc tasks to do, due before the end of the day, or just finishing up whatever presentation you have next.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • You get an opportunity to work on a handful of clients and on many different tasks. You're treated as any other member of the team and are left to your own devices (unless you request some help) to get the work done to completion, and preferably a high quality. However one of the Willis Towers Watson key values is Excellence, this means that all the work you do as an intern is checked by a graduate and then a consultant. This reduces the responsibility you have and the original piece of work always needs to be amended before it can be sent out. In other areas, you're responsible for planning meetings that you might find useful for your own projects. You are given a fair amount of freedom and it becomes your own responsibility in quieter times to look for work and opportunities to learn.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I've definitely learnt a lot from my internship about the investment industry and WTW as a company. The skills I was taught will be useful skills in my degree and in future work; for example I gained a lot of practice in Excel, formatting work in a professional way, presenting and communicating in a professional environment, being personable and confident when meeting new people, managing my time between tasks, working in a team and also leading team meetings. These skills in general are work-specific, but the personable skills and skills in time management and Excel will be utilized weekly in my final year of university.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The atmosphere is incredible. Our team operate on a HotDesk system where you book your desk for a day at a time and can sit anywhere within the team's delegated area. This way you speak to most of the people in the team. The office also operates a "dress for your day" policy; this basically means if you're meeting a client, you wear a suit, but if you're sat in the office with your team for the day you can wear a t-shirt and jeans. Most people opt for wearing jeans/chinos and a polo/shirt day-to-day. All the team members are available to answer your questions, and the way WTW is structured means work is mostly project based. This project based approach to work motivates you to work well for each other, and people aren't forced to work really hard, people are just naturally motivated to complete their work.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The internship was organized very well; day 1 was an induction to the company as a whole cohort of interns - about 70 of us nationally across the different lines of business - and then we had a separate induction for just the interns in investment (9 of us). This second induction allowed us to get to know each other better and get to know how investment works in the industry and in WTW. We had scheduled meetings with line managers to check our progress, scheduled shadowing sessions in other departments to get a broader overview of the company, scheduled presentations as a group and also individually. We had a speaker series to attend (in person if London-based, over conference call if based elsewhere) where 5 speakers spoke to us over lunch times across a few weeks about other lines of business in WTW.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • People of any level are willing to help you understand concepts that are new. Many of the graduates take time out to train you in a certain task before ending you off to figure it out for yourself. This way you're usually working within your capabilities and over the 8 weeks you can push yourself to keep trying new tasks and expand your knowledge of the work that you would do on the graduate program. If you ask for feedback on any task, your team happily oblige to give you constructive criticism as well as tell you what you're doing well. This way you can develop your skills quickly and in a compartmentalized and focused way. The firm invest a little bit of time of a lot of people to make sure you get great exposure to experienced employees and learn from them.

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • At the time of writing I don't know if I'll be offered a graduate role. Those who successfully get the internship are generally likely to get a graduate offer, in recent years 70-80% have been offered a subsequent grad role.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement 西瓜视频s/colleagues?
  • I got on well with all the interns in investment, it was difficult to spend time with the 2 based in Leeds (I was based in the South-East and in London about once per week). We also socialized with interns from Reinsurance, Software and Retirement (which is the actuarial side of the business), this was mostly at the pub on a Friday or just sat with them at lunch in the canteen. Amongst colleagues it was easy to have lunch with them, they showed us the town at lunch time as well as on a few evenings. They invited the interns to join them for drinks or a pub quiz, as well as allowing the interns to organize a social of their own; in investment we had a poker night and the retirement interns had a pub quiz - both of these socials were subsidized and on site after working hours.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Cost of living is moderately high (Reigate, a town in the South-East of England where WTW have an office, has high house prices and therefore rent prices) and in terms of food and drink, the socializing side is barely cheaper than London prices. On average pints are 拢4.50. The good thing about being an intern; everybody knows you earn the least. This means that you almost never have to buy your drinks, and people will look at you like you're crazy if you offer to buy a round.

    4/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • The nightlife is varied, there are many fantastic pubs within walking distance of both the office and the station but there are only 2 'clubs'. Both of which like to be over 21s on Fridays and Saturdays. Fortunately you're under an hour from central London so if you're desperate for a club it's not a big hassle.

    4/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • It depends how much you put yourself out there - I was enthusiastic to get involved in the 5-a-side football that occurs on Wednesday evenings, made myself known, and was given the opportunity to join almost immediately. There aren't an exhaustive list of activities outside of the office that don't involve visiting pubs, but teams have social budgets and would be willing to give you the opportunity to organize your own thing. If you planned on staying in the area for a longer time, locally there is plenty of opportunity to fulfill hobbies and interests.
