About You
Really good experience. We were welcomed earlier in the day and immediately made to feel very comfortable yet reminded of the professional atmosphere. We were then given ample opportunities to learn about the company's various areas varying from Reinsurance to Talent Progression. All the staff were really welcoming and were more than happy to network with us and give us cards etc. Not a 10/10 due to the fact it was only a day long!
I felt valued. Whether this was simply due to the warm welcoming we received by being shown in to the appropriate area, or being offered multiple lots of refreshments, it was always made sure that we were fully catered for and looked after. This was also aided by the fact that they took active engagement with us, e.g. in exercises, listening to our opinions and then adding to them appropriately.
The vast majority of the day was structured around getting to know about the business areas the company has to offer, meaning that it was hard for them to give us particular 'support.' However, when any questions propped up in relation to these, then we were 'guided' to an appropriate answer. At the end of the day, we did receive a MASSIVE amount of help, by being given tips on applying to a 2nd year Summer Internship at the company.
I study Economics meaning that I was expecting for some of the skills used in the subject to be covered. Despite this, the fact it was primarily an overview of the company meant that I wasn't really able to learn financial skills appropriate for each area. For example, I would have been interested to learn about the methods used in Investment Consulting, yet we couldn't pool our interest in to one area. I suppose this is natural due to the days structure.
The Company
Very structured. We had all been sent an email before hand exactly detailing the hours of the day, and it was perfectly stuck to. It was also structured in the fact that the purpose of the day (to introduce us to the company) was balanced with making sure that we weren't 'bombarded' with information. Whether this was giving us laid-out periods for breaks or opportunities for lunch, both our want to learn and 'natural needs' were balanced. I suppose it did overrun by 15 minutes however.
Really good! Naturally this was aided by the fact that I ran in to somebody that I already knew, but we were also encouraged to meet everyone else on the program by switching tables etc. The staff were also very honest about aspects of their job which they didn't enjoy, which aided in making us relax and enjoy the experience more.
This was one of the more 'negative' aspects of the day. Due to the fact we primarily learnt about what the business area is about, we didn't necessarily get to learn what the role 'entails'. For example, we weren't given particulars about their hours which might have been an interesting insight, or the basic functioning of their models. Despite this, by speaking to employees, this was something I was able to achieve myself. This wasn't made clear to those who didn't question uniquely though.
Very much so. By speaking to employees and being spoken to, the insight allowed us to see what the company is like. This was furthered by the fact we were told how the culture has changed since the two companies merged. Despite them giving relatively standard answers like 'it's a really relaxed environment', you honestly felt as if they were telling the whole truth about the sort of hours you do etc.
Helpful. Originally, I had been entirely set on a future career in investment banking for when I'm older. However, after speaking about Reinsurance and the similar approaches it takes to finding strategies similar to that of IB, I am now very interested by this as a future. Again, had the experience been longer, this would have allowed me to further decide.
Everything Else
Considering how 'short' the experience was, I would say that a good 35% of the time was spent networking and meeting others. In fact, I was able to get some business cards, and am sure that I will get a response. From the off, we spoke to employees from all sectors over coffee, and then this was followed by lunch, and then a final networking opportunity at the end of the day. Compared to other experiences I have been on, this was definitely the most filled.
Briefly. One of the employees spoke to us about how he was involved in a Willis Towers Watson football team, and another told us of how she was engaged in a netball team. It might have just been these two, but it seemed to be very much focussed around sport. I imagine the company offer other forms of activities, but these were not spoken about at all. Anyway, the mention of sports team was an off-the-cuff comment, not any REAL information.
