The Role
Willis Towers Watson is a really fun place to do an internship. Everyone is incredibly helpful and friendly and the workplace is a very supportive environment. The internship itself is very well set up (it has now been running for a good number of years) and we were given a lot of projects and had the opportunity to get involved in so many different activities and areas of work.
As aforementioned, everyone was so friendly and supportive and were fully prepared to invest time in us interns. On the first day so many people came and introduced themselves to see how we were settling in and even very senior associates were more than happy to have a chat and answer questions or help out with technical issues. Colleagues were also very keen to get us involved in meaningful work even if it often took them more time to explain it and check over our work than it would have taken them to do it themselves!
I felt our managers gave us a good level of support throughout the internship. They made sure we were settled in the first week and we had weekly catch up meetings to check that everything was going alright. They made themselves very approachable if we ever needed them but they weren鈥檛 breathing down our neck all the time and were happy to give us some independence.
The amount of work I had was quite varied, some days I was very quiet and then others everything seemed to come at once. Work was always there if you volunteered for it though and we were given a few projects to get on with throughout the internship such as organising a social, a technical presentation, hosting drop-in sessions and working through an actuarial fundamentals book to give us an insight into the actuarial exams. This meant that there was always something to do and I never had to sit there and count the hours down until the end of the day.
We were given the opportunity to get involved in a lot of work and I feel like the level of work we were given was similar to that of the grads. Understandably, most of our work was checked over but we were definitely given a lot of meaningful work and I didn鈥檛 have to spend 6 weeks photocopying and fetching tea. Also, for the projects we were assigned such as the presentations and social, we were given full responsibility and left to our own devices to organise it ourselves so our input was definitely appreciated.
As most of the mathematical skills learnt were very actuarial focussed it probably won鈥檛 have a massive impact on my degree studies. However, far more important were the soft and professional skills developed during the internship such as general office skills, using Excel (most of their modelling is done on Excel) as well as presentation skills. As a consultancy, the company seem very keen to hire people with good communication skills and they definitely pushed us to do as many presentation and communication focussed activities as possible which improved my communication skills.
The Company
The atmosphere was much more relaxed than I was initially expecting and I definitely didn鈥檛 feel like I constantly had eyes on me to make sure I was working. Everyone was also very approachable, even senior management, and were more than willing to answer any questions. People were hard working but they were always prepared to make some time to help you out.
The company has been running an internship programme for a long time now and you could definitely tell. The internship was really well set up and we were never left at a loose end. We were set various projects to complete throughout the internship whenever we had downtime and there were plenty of socials during our time here so we could get involved and meet everyone. There was a really good support network and plenty of people we could go to if we had any problems.
We were given comprehensive training in the first couple of weeks to cover all the basics but by far their biggest investment in us was time. It often seemed more effort for colleagues to explain processes to us than it would have been for them to do it themselves but they were very keen to get us involved in as much work as possible so we could experience working life at the company.
Sports and Social Club
Company Parties/Events
The work was interesting and everyone was so friendly so I鈥檇 definitely be interested in coming back to the company in the future. Although everyone does have to work hard, there does seem to be a good work/life balance and there are great career prospects within the company. With the time and resources they have invested in interns, they seem keen to offer them a place on the graduate programme if you perform during the internship.
The Culture
There were plenty of socials during the internship and the grads especially were very keen to involve us interns and take us out. There were also a few sporting events such as weekly 5-a-side football, rounders, cricket and badminton to get involved in so we were kept very busy and the 6 weeks flew by.
As Reigate is close to London it was inevitably pretty expensive. I was living and commuting from London so again that meant that living costs were high and the train from London to Reigate was also expensive as it is on the commuter route. With most of the socials however, there was usually a lot of free booze and bar tabs and I hardly had to pay for a drink at work socials.
Reigate is fairly small so there isn鈥檛 a huge amount of nightlife there, although it does have quite a few pubs for a small town and a couple of bars/clubs. South London isn鈥檛 too far away though and quite a few colleagues lived there so most of the socials ended up in Clapham which was a fun place to go out.
There were a few sports teams as it is such a large office with 5-a-side football taking place every Wednesday evening. Anyone from any standard was welcome to play and there was a lot of head hunting for sports teams in the office. There were also a couple of one-off sports socials such as a cricket match between Retirement and Investment and an office wide rounders tournament.
