Overview
I work as part of a small global team, supporting local patient affairs teams and playing a more strategic role in embedding patient advocacy and engagement (PA&E) across the company from R&D to commercial. I work with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders across different functions. During my placement, my main responsibilities were running a global PA&E network, management of patient advisory boards and coordinating the annual patient organisation disclosure process.
Skills
I grew a huge amount this year, not only in confidence but having a credible presence in the corporate environment. I took initiative, developed my presentation and analytical skills and regularly communicated with a range of stakeholders. Newer skills include stakeholder management and strategic thinking.
Responsibilities
More than I could have imagined! My manager and team empowered me to take on some very interesting projects and as I developed I was able to take more of a lead and given some 'stretch' opportunities. I regularly engaged with senior leaders in the company.
Support & Guidance
I had a very supportive manager and team and grew a supportive network of leaders who helped me to develop, learn and listening to my worries. I would say the early careers offering seemed a little limited and hands off, but this wasn't a problem for me as my team supported me so well and I was always encouraged to ask questions.
Culture
I really like the company culture. There is a clear purpose and everyone is very friendly and happy to help you out. This is particularly good from a development perspective. As in a corporate environment, business pressures and changing priorities can create tension. Overall, I felt at home at GSK and decided pretty early on that this was where I wanted to continue my career here which is testament to the culture and atmosphere.
