Overview
I work in a vaccines team. Initially I spent the first 7 months working solely on method development for a vaccine. The remaining time of my placement I helped out other analytical teams on large molecule projects and started another method development for a different vaccine. All my work was done by HPLC and size exclusion chromatography (SEC).
Skills
Yes, I mastered my analytical thinking skills and complexed problem solving. I have never run a HPLC or SEC before I started my placement but over the course of the year I became very confident at it. I also had a chance to practice my presentational skills, presenting at a site Early Talent symposium and presenting a poster at the chromatography day.
Responsibilities
As much as possible. Since I was the only person working on the method development I was leading my own project and managing my own time.
Support & Guidance
I think a good amount. Everyone in the department are very helpful so whenever I had any questions I was given all the help I needed.
Culture
Everyone are friendly, however, the office I was based in is quiet.
Your Impressions
It was a great opportunity to develop skills that will be useful in the future career. GSK is a great place for someone who has never worked in industry before as it has a very structured program for the IPs and young professionals. I met a lot of amazing people and made good friends.
Yes
Be yourself in the interview and show that you are motivated and willing to learn. Make sure you are able to answer the technical questions.
