Overview
I completed a two-week vacation scheme at Taylor Wessing, where I had the chance to sit in two different departments. The scheme was designed to provide insights into the firm's practice areas, culture, and the day-to-day responsibilities of a trainee solicitor. Within the team, I assisted in drafting emails and documents, conducting deep-dives on companies and researching a variety of topics. Outside the work within my practice area, I attended departmental talks organised by graduate recruitment on a daily basis and worked with my group on our group presentation.
Skills
During the vacation scheme, I developed and improved a range of professional skills and gained valuable insights into the workings of the firm. My communication skills were strengthened through regular interactions with colleagues and my fellow vacation schemers. I also enhanced my commercial awareness by attending presentations by the different practice areas and market trends. Additionally, managing multiple tasks helped refine my time management and organisational skills, while collaborating with other participants and team members improved my ability to work effectively in a professional environment.
Business Insight
Understanding the business and the variety of roles available within the firm was one of the most insightful aspects of the vacation scheme. Through presentations, departmental overviews, and informal conversations with employees at different levels, I gained a clearer picture of how the firm operates as a business - not just as a legal service provider. I learned how different practice areas contribute to the firm's overall strategy and how roles such as trainees, associate, and business services professionals collaborate to deliver value to clients.
Culture
The company culture was welcoming, inclusive, and highly collaborative. From the outset, everyone was very welcoming, approachable, and genuinely invested in helping us learn and feel part of the team. There was a strong emphasis on open communication, which created a supportive environment. The atmosphere was professional yet friendly, with a clear focus on teamwork. Social events and informal chats also gave me a sense of the firm's commitment to maintaining a positive and engaging workplace culture.
Your Impressions
I really enjoyed the insight and found it to be both engaging and rewarding. The scheme offered a well-balanced mix of hands-on legal work, learning opportunities, and social interaction. I particularly appreciated the chance to work on real tasks that gave me a genuine feel for the trainee role, while also learning more about the firm's values and approach. The supportive and inclusive atmosphere made it easy to ask questions and get involved. Overall, the experience confirmed my interest in pursuing a legal career and left me feeling inspired and motivated.
Yes
My main advice for anyone applying to Taylor Wessing is to take time to understand the firm's unique culture and sector focus, and particularly its strength in technology. Tailor your application to reflect why these areas interest you and how your experiences align. Be authentic - it's important to show individuality and a genuine interest in the firm. During interviews and the scheme itself, don't be afraid to ask questions and show curiosity. Finally, make the most of networking opportunities, speaking to trainees and associates can give you valuable insight into the firm and help you stand out.
