Overview
During the Summer Vacation Scheme we sat in two departments over the course of two weeks. In each department we were assigned a supervisor and a trainee buddy, both of whom would provide us with work. During the scheme there were various 'Focus On' sessions run by members of the firm's practice areas, as well as a client secondment panel and a pro bono workshop. There were also social events, and we were encouraged to reach out to other people in the firm for informal coffee chats. We were assessed on the basis of feedback from our supervisors and trainee buddies, as well as a formal group presentation we had to prepare over the course of the two weeks.
Skills
I have developed my professional networking skills, as you are pushed to interact with a wide range of people across the firm in different contexts. I have also developed my research and drafting skills as a result of my assigned tasks.
Business Insight
The Scheme gives an excellent insight into the firm, particularly as we were invited to departmental events such as strategy meetings or seminars alongside the permanent members of staff. It also gives an excellent insight into the role of a trainee through the work tasks and your ability to speak with your trainee buddy.
Culture
The firm is very welcoming and everyone I reached out to in any capacity was happy to speak to me.
Your Impressions
I very much enjoyed my time at the firm and find myself wishing the Scheme were longer!
Yes
Make sure you get as much of an understanding of the firm as possible at the application stage by attending firm events and speaking to people who work here. Throughout the process make sure to relax and be yourself, especially if you get a place on the Scheme!
