Consulting with team members and cross-function peers to find areas where data science can be used to make the business more efficient and data driven.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • developed software engineering skills, as well as learnt and built on machine learning skills. Using these skills to implement the technology within new and existing tools. Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • GSK offer a lot of support, through a manager and mentor (buddy) that you can turn to with any problems or issues. However my experience was very independent - I got my projects and was left to learn the skills and read any documentation alongside working on my tasks. Responsibility was similar to that of a full-time member of the team which I appreciated, it forces you to learn and become productive.

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • Brilliant culture, brilliant people. I've worked with some great people who are great at what they do. Everyone I have met has been incredibly nice, interesting, and helpful. It encourages you to work harder to complete your projects to a high standard. No one is looking over your shoulder at you to do your work, and instead foster a hands-off approach when tasking people with work. Regular updates with your manager to set and discuss goals and things you would like to develop during each year you work here, and regular updates with your teams projects to notify you of any projects you may be able to join if they sound interesting.

  • Yes

  • 8. What advice would you give to others applying to GSK
  • Be yourself, sounds cheesy but if you have enough knowledge to get your foot in the door with an interview, then being yourself will help you. Be comfortable and honest with your answers - no one knows everything, and be aware of the gaps in your knowledge. Having a genuine interest in the company, culture, and industry also helps and will allow you to settle in at every stage of the placement.
