The Role
I enjoyed the placement as it had plenty of areas to improve on and you meet new people every day, so your contact list grows. However, there are cons to working at IBM, such as the opportunities given may not be possible for you to take.
As with every team, there are those who are a great team player and there are those who hardly interact with us. Nevertheless, since my job included interacting with the team on a daily basis, I've come to be extremely valued by my colleagues.
I was given the starting push, but in a competitive environment such as IBM, it needed a bit more than a starting push. I think that for some occasions, I needed more support than I got, but I persevered, and got my objectives in the end.
8-3 was really busy, and then 3-4.30 was bit less busier but I always found that I couldn't leave before 4.45 as there was a lot of routine work to do everyday
I was responsible for the workload of my colleagues, so I found that a big responsibility. Other than this, it was mostly admin responsibilities.
Because I chose the opportunities which I thought had value to me, I think that they will serve me well in the future. I have already made some contacts, been offered some jobs from competitors and have some ideas about my dissertation next year. I could have chased more opportunities, but I had many personal issues which took up more of my time.
The Company
Because the office itself was just desks and tables, it was a dull office. People were working, dealing with clients on the phone and generally just quiet. However, there was plenty of socialising going on, pranks between interns, and joking around. At times, it did get tense, with arguments between team mates, but that happened very few times.
I think it was really well set up for interns. However, I found that due to my disabilities (deafness), I missed out on several opportunities, and because I was never able to chase those opportunities, it became harder for me to maximise my placement. Please note that these were from no faults of IBM but my own decisions.
IBM has their own training academy, courses and workshops, few of which I've attended. However, IBM (with their strict money rules) have not paid for me to go and do external training, as my job does not require it.

They are difficult to get and if you want to climb the ladder, it is a huge competition the whole way. I think that I would like to continue working for IBM because I like the atmosphere, and because it is such a large company, I can spend time in many different departments and broaden my plethora of skills.
The Culture
I was not very social this year but the interns were very social, with pranks, barbeques, nights out and parties.
London Living Cost
The nightlife was basically non-existent, because the office was in the middle of an industrial estate by the airport, and with little transport options. Furthermore, since I commuted from home, I had my own nightlife. Finally, for me and other interns, we were given options to work in city offices, which was great as the nightlife there is amazing.
Due to my work hours, no. However, I do some part-time voluntary work with various charities in my spare time, so I already had opportunities.
