The Role
My placement at IBM was a very challenging yet rewarding year. I learnt a lot about myself and the company, I improved my professionalism and I worked with some really inspiring people that made the experience what it was.
I felt truly valued by my colleagues, they respected me and was patient with my learning. They gave me great feedback along the way and was always assisting me in learning new things.
I was well supervised and guided by most members of my team. They would support me in my learning experience and make time for me to help with any questions I had or to sit down and tell me about new concepts/ work that was happening in the company.
Generally a perfect balance, by the time I was getting to know my role and getting quicker at my initial tasks I started getting involved in other projects/responsibilities. Once I had showed initiative to do so, the team welcomed this with helping me get involved in other areas of work.
I was given a lot of responsibility on my role. I took over the risk management responsibility on my role as well as coordinating an internal audit.
The personal skills I have developed I can adapt and use in any further professional environment. Organisation skills as well as Excel/PowerPoint and other financial skills will help me with my final year at university and hopefully contribute to another successful year of study.
The Company
Being on client site the atmosphere in the office can be challenging at times but often was relaxed and friendly. I also had the opportunity to work from other IBM office locations and also work from home. It was generally quite flexible.
The placement was very well organised. Being assigned a task manager and what is called an Early Professional Manager meant I was well looked after. We have 3 meetings/reviews with our EPM manager throughout the year to check progress and satisfaction of the placement, one after 3 months, one half way through the year and one final presentation meeting towards the end of the year.
The company invested a lot of time training interns up, they are a well respected and appreciated community within the company. Interns are not treated as interns as IBM but just as if we are any other normal employee. The support we are given is second to none and the company provide a really great environment for interns to network and grow.
Flexi Time
Working from home
The graduate scheme looks very appealing with a chance to come back to the company working in a more interesting and challenging role with the opportunities to complete various qualifications such as CIMA. Also with a 拢30,000 starting salary it is a very appealing graduate job. I have applied to the scheme but will await to find out in September the outcome,
The Culture
With 300+ interns and another 200+ graduates there is a great social scene if you wish to be involved. With a weekly Thursday night social for all interns. Great chance to meet new people and network.
As I was on client site, the cost of living/socialising in Canary Wharf was relatively high however this meant lunch/ some aspect of travel could be expensed and refunded.
Nightlife in London is very good, there are numerous bars and restaurants within steps of most offices.
There was always opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work, lots of giveback opportunities to get involved in such as helping out at careers fairs, going to secondary schools and giving talks etc.
