    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I absolutely enjoyed my placement. From a career perspective, IBM鈥檚 teams are passionate about demonstrating the work that they do. If you are interested in any kind of role or career, all you have to do is ask! This was extremely useful for me, as it gave me a greater understanding of the way the business works. The IBM Hursley site also gave opportunities for me to take part in teaching givebacks, where I got to teach 西瓜视频s outside of my role for 1 hour a week, for 13 weeks. There were also opportunities to get involved in sporting activities such as cricket, football, mountain biking, etc with fellow colleagues during breaks and after work. Ultimately, I was able to gain a wide range of new skills, while building my confidence in using them in a professional environment.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I definitely felt valued by my colleagues. Sometimes my colleagues made me feel as if the tasks that I was assigned could not be done without me, which was very encouraging and kept me inspired throughout my time at my IBM placement. The way they also explained in detail how the tasks I would work on would help them or how it contributes to the wider IBM always put the value into perspective. I always felt like a member of the IBM family and never felt like I was actually doing a placement as a 西瓜视频, which was very uplifting.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • The guidance and support by my management was exceptional. My task manager always gave me advice on how I could improve my skills, taught me about the business and provided me with immense support throughout my placement. As a result, I always looked forward to our meetings! I always felt like I could go to my manager and talk to him about any issue I was having, sourcing out avenues to improve my skills and the way he was always able to put my progress into perspective and provide advice on how I can use them to assist with further growth was exceptional. I also had an early development placement manager who set-up group meetings with other placement 西瓜视频s from different teams and myself, so we could share with each other what we were getting involved in or what we were struggling with. This was very helpful, as all of the discussions always made me reflect on what I could do moving forward. In general, the support and guidance from management kept me motivated and words cannot describe how instrumental they were in my overall development throughout my placement.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • It always depended on the kind of task I was working on. If I was working on a task that required new implementations, the level of activity depended on how the progress on meeting the requirements went. There were days I would have tasks to do and finish them faster than I expected, but other days I would be swamped in work. It all depends on the dynamics of the department that you are in and what you get yourself involved in.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • For my placement, I was given the opportunity to work along with another placement 西瓜视频 to maintain and develop an internal software tool for IBM. As a result, the level of responsibility always depended on the demands for that particular period. Often, the tool was mostly used at the beginning and the ending of the month, so new changes and implementations often got swamped with fixing bugs that were reported during the time. However, I was able to get involved in more work as well, outside of my core role. The thing is, when I felt like I could take on more responsibilities outside my core role, I would always let my task manager know and he would always sort extra work for me to do. There is plenty of work to do at IBM, so there will be something there with your name on it.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • The skills I developed will help me throughout the rest of my degree and beyond. This is because through the process of gaining and improving my skills, I was able to use them in a professional environment to measure the progress I had been making with them. Additionally, some of the skills that I learned I was able to transfer into my daily life, such as my communication, reasoning and analytical skills, just to name a few. Generally, the skills learned are skills for life and will benefit you in ways you cannot imagine.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The general atmosphere was lively. There were always people moving around and talking to each other. Everyone had a very friendly aura, which never made it feel awkward for me to say hello. Sometimes when someone celebrated a birthday or if a special event took place, you would always find free treats to have. Outside of the office, I even went bowling with my team and for dinner, which was fantastic!

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • At least for me, it was clear that IBM had been running placement schemes for many years. The overall support networks set up for 西瓜视频s throughout their placement were useful. We were informed about opportunities to learn more about the business, take part in sporting activities, courses in programming and even. There was even a careers fair set up for 西瓜视频s to go and learn more about the roles available on the graduate schemes, in the event that 西瓜视频s are interested in coming back.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • In regards to the training and development I had, they never required any financial support. All the training and development I needed always had someone there who was able to provide that for me. I felt like the IBMers were always optimistic about helping me out with my growth throughout the time, whether it was to improve a skill or learn more about the company.

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • IBM does a great job at promoting roles that they would have available for graduates after their placement and provide numerous workshops on what to expect, if you decide to come after University. Even if you try not to hear about it, you will hear about it and can apply back while you are there if you choose. However, you must perform well throughout the placement, in order to be able to be eligible for the fast track recruitment process.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement 西瓜视频s/colleagues?
  • 5/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • I lived in a town called Eastleigh, which had a Lidl鈥檚, Sainsbury鈥檚 and Tesco鈥檚. The rent that I paid cost about 拢430 a month including bills. However, the price of housing all depends on where you live or what is available, so housing can range from 拢350 - 拢500, whether you decide to live in Southampton, Eastleigh, Chandler鈥檚 Ford or Winchester. I should also mention that getting to work was a mission, as the IBM Hursley site is quite a distance from residential areas. The nearest train stop to IBM Hursley, would still require a 20 minute drive to get to it. However, IBM does provide a shuttle bus from this area (Chandler鈥檚 Ford). In regards to socialising, that has to take place within one of the cities I mentioned above and all depends on what your interests are.

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • 4/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • There were several opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work. There are nearby Universities in the area, so it can feel like a 西瓜视频 atmosphere if you choose. I was able to take part in biking, track and field, mountain climbing, gym, etc just to name a few. To get to London costs about 拢21, which is the city of endless activity. The number of opportunities you can get involve in are endless and all depends on your interests.
