The Role
I enjoyed the experience of being a JP Morgan employee very much. The facilities are brilliant and far exceed any I have worked in before. The employees were all lovely and very approachable and quickly made me feel at home. However, I found the work I was given did not match my expectations. I was expected to do scanning of a huge backlog of documents for 7 hours a day which, given the competitiveness of the interview process was surprising.
My colleagues were all very nice to me and, for the first few weeks, quick to give me little tasks I could do to help. I was given the opportunity to talk in team meetings like any other member of staff and included in day to day conversations.
My immediate supervisor was supportive although there were less meetings than I would have liked - I didn't feel they were too interested in hearing how my project was going beyond the headline results. My line manager had very little to do with me and didn't even contact me on the first day or before I started which I thought was very poor.
I was busy most days although it was very repetitive work and not very interesting - there was an awful lot of scanning to do so day to day there was always another pile of papers for me to do!
Little responsibility. Although I was given free reign to scan it wasn't an important job in terms of the day to day business of the team. It was my own "project" but didn't given me much exposure to the business.
The excel skills I've learned are extremely valuable and will help no end in any similar role in the future. I've learned a wide variety of formulae and data handling techniques that I had had no exposure to before.
The Company
There was a good atmosphere, people were all very happy to work hard but understood the importance of a work/life balance. People were friendly to one another and this lead to a comfortable atmosphere.
Poorly. There was an induction on the first day, however we were just talked at with zero interaction. Then we were thrown into a team with little support from HR and the only networking events put on were almost entirely ignored by staff members.
Little. I haven't had any real directed training, and when requested I was pointed in the direction of Training Central, JPM's online learning resource which doesn't involve any sort of personal approach.
National Travel
Although I would consider working for JPM again, as the facilities and working environment and people were all extremely good, I wouldn't want to work in Bournemouth since the actual work does not seem dynamic enough.
The Culture
Good social scene, although mostly run by the interns they were always looking to do things such as weekend trips and activites. I also had use of the on site tennis courts and was able to play with other interns.
The cost of living is reasonable, however as a local I was able to live at home with my parents. Socialising was also not too expensive, especially compared to prices in bigger cities like London!
Very good nightlife with a great mix of nightclubs, bars etc. Also with the addition of the beach there was always something to do. A sociable group of interns meant I was never bored in the evenings.
Lots of opportunity. I often played football at a local sports centre with other members of staff and played tennis with interns. There were networking trips and also a corporate responsibility day.
