    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of the insight and what was involved on a day-to-day basis.
  • Every day we would cover a few business areas. Day 1 was IBD, day 2 was markets, day 3 was asset and wealth management, as well as risk, day 4 covered a large variety of divisions such as payments, securities services, and corporate functions, and day 5 was a mock AC day with senior members of staff. There were insights given by staff of all levels throughout the week, and also collaborative activities such as presentations, games, and discussions. It was a really dynamic week because of that. There were also networking sessions with employees, and a fun social after day 3 to celebrate the week with everyone.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • The week was great for developing confidence in speaking with a variety of people. I got to interact with my peers, as well as employees, of all different backgrounds. I also grew more confident in asking questions, and that at this level, no question is a silly question. I learnt so much more about the markets business through all the games and case studies we got to do throughout the week, as well as panels from the business line. That really helped me discover that it’s a career I’m interested in pursuing.

    Business Insight

  • 3. What was it like understanding all about the business and potential roles available?
  • The week gave so much more colour to the few things you see online about JPMorgan. By the end of the week, you could really see how everything clicked together, what makes JPMorgan special, and how the business actually makes money. Another great thing about the week was getting to see the culture first hand. JPMorgan has really friendly and passionate employees. I had some preconceptions before coming that I would have nothing valuable to offer in conversations with such talented people, but JPMorgan employees are so down-to-earth, humble, and encouraging. I received some really amazing advice from people across a variety of divisions across the week. Something that really stood out during the week was how clear the employees were about what skills would make you good for a variety of roles. It helped me narrow down the areas of banking I was most interested in really quickly which was super helpful and insightful.

    Culture

  • 4. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • I would describe the culture as encouraging first and foremost. I could really tell from speaking with employees that everyone around you helps you grow, and that the week was designed for us to learn more about the business of course, but to also learn more about ourselves. When networking, employees were always interested in what I’ve been up to and what I’m hoping to get out of the experience, and then offered lots of great insights in response. I loved how diverse the organisation was – everyone had joined through very different paths. Employees also stay with the company for a very long time. I really liked that because you could tell they were really happy at JPM and felt like they were still growing in their career even decades on. We had talks from senior leaders very often throughout the week, and they treated everyone like their peers which stood out to me. I also loved the ways that JPM tries to be inclusive, such as through offering ethnic meals for lunches and having advocacy programmes for people of Black heritage. Whenever I walked into JPMorgan each day, I felt really inspired by everyone. Everyone was really kind and would pass by you and give you a smile. It felt really warm and seemed like an amazing place to work at any level.

    Your Impressions

  • 5. To what extent did you enjoy the insight?
  • I enjoyed it the most out of the three insights I did over the Easter break. You could tell how meticulously thought out every activity, panel, and presentation was, to really provide a full picture of the business. I loved being able to talk to everyone and get to know lots of new people. I also really enjoyed how interactive each day was, and that the spring was a full week long to fully immerse you in the company. The mock interview on the final day was amazing as it was a really safe space to articulate all the cool things I’d learnt over the course of the week, and receive really valuable feedback from a more senior member of the business. My interviewer helped me reflect on which business area I loved the most, and that’s really helped me on my journey which I am super grateful for.

  • Yes

  • 8. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to J.P. Morgan
  • I found that a cover letter wasn’t necessary so I focused on making sure my CV was really good, clear, and showcased a diverse array of skills and interests. I had nothing finance related on my CV and I don’t study a related degree, but still had an amazing time at the finance spring insight. I think at this level, behaviourals are so important. JPMorgan’s spring insight applications opened really early this year, so at the time I hadn’t practised many Hirevues. If I could go back in time I’d practise them much more. I’d practise articulating myself as well as I could, and demonstrating a keen interest in the world of finance.
