The Role
I am grateful I had an opportunity to see UBS for myself but was disappointed with the way we were treated and the week itself, especially in comparison to other banks' Spring Weeks.
The atmosphere was unpleasant and pressured as at the end of that week we would be interviewed and assessed for the summer internship of 2011 (we were not prewarned about this) therefore everyone was very competitive and there was no sense of team work/cooperation felt.
The staff were unhelpful, were often not around and were never networking with us at lunchtime or available for questions. Any negativity/questions surrounding the final day of assessment was ignored or rudely rejected.
We were fairly busy; we had presentations, a tour of the trading floor, breakfast and lunches for the week and other talks for the rest of the time.
We had no roles as such due to the group size
It was interesting to hear the insight from all of the various departments of the bank but was often too broad and therefore I cannot tell you anything new about the area I would like to eventually end up in.
The Company
Very tense, especially towards the end of the week as there was competition from peers due to the assessment centre on the Friday. Knowing you would be assessed against these people made the atmosphere unpleasant.
Well organised but not particularly pleasant. [This section of the comment has been removed by a member of the RateMyPlacement Team because it did not meet our site terms and conditions]. The feedback form was also constantly monitored and order recorded in order to identify who gave bad feedback. We were constantly watched the whole time by staff and video cameras in the rooms which made people feel uncomfortable.
Very little investment. We had our accommodation paid for us for the week and it was a horrible place which was very dirty. The group was too big (88 Î÷¹ÏÊÓƵs) for any individual investment. There were few networking opportunities. [This section of the comment has been removed by a member of the RateMyPlacement Team because it did not meet our site terms and conditions]. It was difficult to find the corresponding division representative and therefore to ask questions and there was no flexibility with regard altering divison.
I did not like the way potential staff were treated or monitored. It was an overly pressured environment e.g. forced to do a numerical test with no warning, not informed we would be assessed for next summer's internship now, and no other alternative. We therefore had to agree to give up the whole of next summer over a year in advance with no flexibility.
The Culture
We were constantly subjected to a camera and videa camera in our faces for the whole time, including an evening social event where we had snacks at a bar whilst having a pub quiz. [This section of the comment has been removed by a member of the RateMyPlacement Team because it did not meet our site terms and conditions].
We had our accommodation paid for by the bank (which was a horrendous apart-hotel). Dinner we had to pay for ourselves for most evenings (we had dinner out together once).
No chance to see nightlife, it was a brief week and an early start/
There were no further opportunities.
