The Role
This internship introduced me to the world of investment banking. I enjoyed learning about this industry and seeing how Software Engineering fits into this picture
I felt very valued by my colleagues who put a lot of trust in my abilities. I was happy to learn how they started in this industry and to notice all of the things we have in common
In my team, help was always there even though some times not immediately available. Everyone is busy so that's understandable and there's always some other task to work on if you get stuck with something. Other forms of support include a buddy system (every intern is peered up with a graduate) as well as access to senior advisors.
In the first week, I wasn't getting enough work assigned to me, but that changed soon.
I was not allowed to perform any major updates on their codebase without first getting my changes approved (which sometimes took some time). I did, however, enjoy full responsibility in developing my own project which consisted in a support tool complementing one of systems that my team was working on.
I've learnt how Software Engineering is applied in Investment Banking and I've also learnt about the industry. My analytical skills have improved as a result of debugging complex applications and I've also learnt to make better use of my software dev tools.
The Company
People were generally relaxed, but highly focused. There's always a great deal of activity. Time matters in this industry and everybody wants to get their part done before the deadline.
Not too many social events and the timing of some was not exactly perfect. Other than that, it was flawless.
We had a few seminars on soft skills which I found really useful. There were also some other events and workshops - not necessarily targeted towards interns.

Company Parties/Events
Massive organisation. Good prospects
The Culture
There weren't too many organised social events throughout the duration of the internship and the timing of the ones that happened wasn't very good. I would have preferred to have the boat party a lot earlier.
With rents almost three times higher than in Glasgow, London is very expensive. However, the salary really does a lot to balance this. If you're not a big spender, you can also save a considerable amount of money out of it.
It's London. The options are limitless.
